i'm posting this because maryann and bluevision seem to be hi-jacking all threads with 'do you like u-vox, you know - the pink one?'
so, what i'd like to know is, do you like it?

I am not hijacking all threads, I am fighting on all fronts for a weak album that belongs to the history of a wonderful band in the same way like VIENNA, RIE or SOR! Point.
And if I am the only one: YES I LIKE IT, BECAUSE IT IS WEAK.
Enough said.

I can't see the results, but i'm guessing most folk will say they hate it. I think we've heard lots of reasons why but I think mostly it's because it's sour grapes that the band split after it! I personally don't mind it. It's like alomost every other album I own (and believe me there are lots) some songs are good and other I'm more inclined to skip past... that doesn't make it a bad album! (just my personal opinion of course)

I'm in the "its ok" camp as there are some songs or even some bits of songs I like. I wouldn't choose to play the whole album though...

I heard All Fall Down the other week and actually thought it was pretty emotive. Its not an Ultravox song but the words, Midge's delivery and the arrangement really complemented each other.

So there. yuk

I think U-Vox is their best album by far. My only gripe is that there weren't enough female backing singers in evidence and not nearly enough folk songs on there. Also the Chieftains were criminally under-used...

Ah, here come the men in white coats with my straitjacket... nutjob

But seriously, it's not a bad album if listened to objectively. Unfortunately that's easier said than done so it suffers from comparison with the great work that had gone before. It also serves to represent the fact that Ultravox didn't go out on a 'high' as they should have.

I wasn't thinking of one album in particular. What I'm saying is that U-Vox is not very "Ultravox-like" and could quite easily have passed as a Midge solo album. Give me JF any day.

U-Vox was perhaps too much of a jump forward when compared to the previous album, Lament. Brass section, more live drums/new drummer (different style & sound), female backing vocalists, orchestral arrangement, more Midge Ure-style "why is the world so bad" lyrics, another bass player on one track, not to mention the pink artwork. Most fans weren't ready.

My opinions:

Same Old Story: listenable, out of place on album, 12" version better

Sweet Surrender: OK, nothing special about it

Dream On: I like this one, very moody, Billy Currie-ish, uninteresting live version on "Rare 2"

The Prize: catchy riffs, good middle-8 imho

All fall down: too repetitive due to ballad structure and too many verses, clichéd lyrics

Time to kill: my personal favourite, simply catchy

Moon madness: does nothing for me

Follow your heart: OK

All in one day: another personal favourite, has George Martin's mark all over it, I also like the instrumental version, superb chord progression

Overall, I liked the album from day one and still listen to it regularly, but my no.1 Ultravox album remains Lament.

Gilles

Not putting oil into the flames again, but thanks for your post Gilles! I feel much better now to know that I am not the only one playing that album from time to time. For 90%, we have the same thinking about your trackcomments, disagree mostly on DREAM ON (I like especially the RARE2-version).
So thats it for me. Having a look to the result of the poll now lets me know, that I am no the only one with a pink CD in my cabinet. Discussion in this case is done for me now I think. Maryann, have you an idea what we can discuss now?

I like all of the following tracks, and I also agree 100% that they don't really sound very Ultravox-y.

Still, a good song is a good song is a good song.

Sweet Surrender
Dream On
The Prize
Follow your heart
