Smash Hits Sept ? 1981 - Tue, 08 Feb 2011 02:36:00

Hi folks, in this edition there was an article featuring Rage In Eden album with description of what each song was about or aiming to achieve,,,it's not the issue with Ultravox on the front cover. If anyone has a copy I'd like to buy or read it please? smile

Hmm, it'd be interesting to read that. I'm not bothered about owning the original and certainly wouldn't pay a tenner for it but if you do buy it, would you be kind enough to post scans or even just give us the gist? Thanks.

The edition in question isn't included yet but here is an archive of scanned Smash Hits magazines that hopefully will be completed:

The person behind these sites can also be contacted on facebook. Maybe he can send a scan of the Ultravox article via email (or post it here  ).

I definitely had this issue as I used to collect Smash Hits, The Face and New Sounds, New Styles at this time. Along with lots of other collectable items I left the copies at home when I moved into my first house, my mother (although still at the same address has from time to time had a de-cluttering fit and given certain things to charity shops, however I do occasionally find gems in our old attic, I'll have a look and see if it has escaped her grasp. wink

There's a facebook page you can join so when a new edition is added it automatically pops up on your home page.

I shall feel very nostalgic when they publish my first one from 1982 with Altered Images on the cover & a free Toyah/Human League poster. I still have the poster & wish now I'd kept some of the mags. I have got songwords/posters in a couple of scrapbooks & separate ones for Ultravox items that appeared. Think in that 1st SH I got Gary Numan named his favourite record as "Slow Motion"!!

That was during the period where they got a current star to pick a song each week, wasn't it? And they put up the lyrics as well. I remember seeing that...

Yes it was....I can't remember the exact title of it. Wanted to hear SM for ages after that & when I finally, finally did after months of waiting....it was the very last couple of seconds on the Anne Nightingale show!! banghead

Smash Hits was great smile
I started around 1983 my mother used to get them subcribed from the NewsAgents while at boarding school. On the back pages there used to be a great mail order company place called Oldies Unlimited which stocked 7" & 12" Vinyl brand new ex-chart stock at cheap prices.

On the Smash Hits website I'm on...the issue with Midge on the cover Feb 19 - Mar 4 has just this second appeared on my facebook. Interesting contents though despite it not being what you are after. Into the bargain you get Joe Dolce songwords as well!! Pete Burns on p16 looking like Ian Asbury of The Cult a couple of years later is a bit of a hoot!! confused2 biglaugh

Couldn't believe it when I found I do have this issue....Sept 3-16 1981 price 35p.

As well as the RIE feature there is a Pretenders centrespread & Soft Cell on the back page. Gary Numan's 'She's Got Claws' are among the songwords.
The mag is in very good condition as neither the crossword or word search have been completed in any way. The only blemish as such is part of the address written on the cover. There is also a competition to win a signed RIE album where you have to identify 5 Ultravox songs from a 'story'.

In the Q & A next to the RIE feature 3 of the band list their "Most Hated Record" as 'Shaddup You Face'. Billy however, opts for "The new Lol Creme & Kevin Godley effort". I'm guessing he means 'Under your Thumb' (great record to me), 'Wedding Bells'? or maybe 'Life Is A Minestrone'. confused2

I won't divulge what the Ed says to one of his other answers but it is 'unfortunate'!! biglaugh

You'll have to wait & see for that one!! wink

Re: Smash Hits Sept ? 1981 - Mon, 21 Feb 2011 18:16:00

I also found a couple of other things I forgot I had....a Record Mirror from when it was magazine form from 1985 & Smash Hits from 1980. These had John Foxx & or Ultravox articles.

Also found a clear vinyl of the 'Lament' album (totally forgot about that) & a 'signed' 'Lament'. Paid just under 3 so don't know how authentic the sigs are although the pen used looks like one of those marker ones that were frequently used. Warren's is smudged & interestingly it's not been signed by Chris.
