BBC6 interview and Tiny Colour Movies DVD - Mon, 17 Jul 2006 17:03:00

On the BBC6 music interview this morning, John answered an e-mail that was sent in, asking about if there were any plans to release a DVD of the movies that make up TCM.

John said there are - didn't say when. He said he saw the films he based the songs on in a friend's (Mike Barker) video collection.

John is interested in doing something using huge projections, and said he's hoping to do something at the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Arts) early next year.

The rest of the interview was spent talking about influences in the early days and focussing on the Ultravox reissues that are out today.

They played the Beatles' Tomorrow Never Knows (one of John's favourites) I hadn't heard this track and it's so similar to 'Through My Sleeping' - I can really hear that influence even more so now!

You'd never heard Tomorrow Never Knows before?!?

You *had* heard of The Beatles, right...? ;-)

Nope!!

Actually yes I had heard it - but didn't know it by title.

I grew up listening to a few Beatles albums from my parent's record collection - but when I got older and got into different kinds of music and started to realise what I really liked, I left the Beatles behind, so there were a couple of their albums I hadn't heard.

While I enjoy their music and relate to their influence in so many artists' work, I dont have any active interest in it nowadays.

Hence my lack of knowledge on this subject!

On the whole the Beatles passed me by too except "Sargeant Pepper" which is a superb album full of great songs especially She Leaving Home, A day in the life and Lucy In The Sky with Diamonds. Mind you Within you, Without You IMHO is the crappiest song on the whole album.

My favourite Beatles albums were Abbey Road and Sgt Pepper - what a great album.

Thoroughly agree about Within You Without You Peter, it just sounds out of place. A Day In The Life is excellent.

Haven't played any Beatles in years, but it's all there in my head I guess!

Sorry, but you can't NOT explore some of John's influences. eek banghead

Shifting City, Mysterious Ways, Golden Section and Nation 12 especially draw on the whole psychedelia movement - SC (tonight Matthew, I'm going to be Lennon and McCartney...) in particular is full of ideas picked up from The Beatles.
You can get so much more out of these albums by getting a feel for the places the ideas came from.

John's work is like a cleverly designed website.
You hear something you like and its a hyperlink to another (green) world. Its an organic part of something much bigger than itself.
