'The Quartet Lament for a Rage in Vienna' or 'UVOX'. The band never released an album with that name (please tell me they didn't!)

Re: New Album - Mon, 24 Jan 2011 07:17:00

I think they should call it The Prize. And it should include a remix of that song - with synths and lots of drums. laugh

I'm looking forward to hearing the new album but keeping a very open mind on what it will sound like & making no pre-judgements.

I'm sure I shall enjoy it like all the previous albums, albeit to differing degrees, bearing the Ultravox name.

Re: New Album - Mon, 24 Jan 2011 20:32:00

Nah, I reckon it'll be something classy and memorable. A one-word title would seem to be likely and I doubt anything like Reformation would make it (too Spandau Ballet), Reunion (too obvious) or anything referring to reforming. As regards to the inlay design, that should be down to Peter Saville who is probably working on it now, given that he takes AGES to produce something!

To me that sounds way too close to a former album!!

Personally I can't even begin to think what the title might be.

Yeah, probably one word. That's why I said Renaissance, but more as a joke as I guess they won't lay too much emphasis on the fact that they are together again.

Maybe they should set up a contest for this. The winner gets a signed copy and is credited in the album sleeve laugh

Re: New Album - Mon, 24 Jan 2011 23:22:00

I reckon they should simply call it 'ULTRAVOX'

..nothing else needs to be said, it's them, no frills, no gimmicks, just four chaps making something bigger that the sum of the parts.. it's them!

..there has not been an Ultravox album called Ultravox before, 'cos the first one had an exclamation mark at the end!

..plus, if it turns out to be their only foray into the whole arena again, what better way to close the circle than to debut all those years ago with Ultravox! and to close in 2011 with Ultravox

..my second choice would be "The Dreaded Pink Thing was a steaming turd and we think you lot deserved better, so we're sorry, ok?"

I think having done two self titled albums so far (Ultravox! and U-Vox) doing three would be a bit much....

I wonder what the cover will look like? Perhaps it will have the band on the cover for the first time since 1980....

I like it when the album title matches a track name, as in "Vienna", "Rage in Eden" and "Lament".
I wonder what the song titles might be?
I hope sometime soon we might get just a few titles or lyrics 'leaked'??

How about Unity (shows standing as one once again) or Crystal (as is crystals of ice, which Canada is full of at the moment? Crystal clear music?) Something short and catchy....

Cover could be something icy and mystic, snow capped mountains (real picture, not drawn like We Came To Dance)....

Or how about Torque Point, as it was never "officially" used?

Re: New Album - Wed, 26 Jan 2011 08:38:00

My tuppeneth is that they'll name the album with one of the song titles and not reference themselves or their renaissance in any particularly overt way.

What would be great (either with the album or at a later date) would a 'Making Of ...' as I think it would be very interesting to hear how they took the plunge to work together again, how they found writing and recording songs together etc etc. I think it would be one of the more meaningful and interesting of those type of documentaries

Re: New Album - Wed, 26 Jan 2011 22:51:00

The tricky thing is going to be coming up with a title that's (a) not been used by any other band before, or (b) not resorting to something that's too cliched or predictable isn't it.

My vote's going to 'Stripeycardie'.

I think Chris Cross would have vetoed that. I read in an interview from the 80´s, that ELO´s music was the worst. He couldn´t stand it. One of their most successful albums was "Out of the blue" from 1977. smile

OK, consider this then. It doesn't matter what I individually think of the press or worry what's potentially said or written. If thats all you've got to keep you awake at night then your a very lucky man/woman E. G. Ekin...and with your point of view totally taken on board then maybe the bad should call the album ' Rubbish' or 'Terrible'...then when you open your copy of the 'Sun' or whatever paper's music reviewer whos opinion that you worry about so much writes their personal review on the album ( if they can bear to take their copy of the latest Justin Bieber album out from their CD player long enough to give it a listen ) things can only be looking upwards..... :-)

Re: New Album - Thu, 10 Feb 2011 06:32:00

frown

Thanks for the reply. You know, a few years ago, i would have been quite taken with writing a reply to a posting that could have possibly continued an argument. But interestingly, I do appreciate there's no point to that now. You have your point of view, and that's fine. Debate is good. Debate is what makes forums like this thrive and for people to remain relevant to the music and band they love.

I don't read a physical newspaper; for the small sums of money they cost against the time I have to read them it would be wasted. When I worked in town, The Standard was the paper I took, mainly because the media section was fascinating - to learn about the comings and goings in what would have been termed in old days as Fleet Street was amazing - and because the specialist columnists wrote with an entertaining style and incisive views. My father buys 'The Sun', but for my news I get that either from Radio 4 in the mornings or online broadsheets, the latter if I get to see them at all during the day. I appreciate they may be akin to listening to the fashionably disliked Oxbridge mafia, but they do at least allow people to gather an informed opinion for themselves without having to be spoon fed a diet of lowest common denominator crap. I'm older now. My music magazine of choice used to be 'Q', but I gave that up when it seemed to become reliant on a headlines and stories that claimed 'The Foo Fighters' or 'U2' were the greatest band in the world and that 'Nevermind' by 'Nirvana' is always going to considered the greatest album of all time. There came a point when either 'it' had become tired, or I had. Thinking back, I suspect it is the latter.

frown

I'm middle aged, degree educated and stuck in a job several grades below what I should be that I don't like (but am pleased to be employed given the current climate) and I have Multiple Sclerosis that has been in remission, thank God, for about nine years now. For that last point, it is what it is; I do not ask for sympathy or pity because if you met me, for the most part, you would not know I had it unless I told you and I am genuinely incredibly fortunate compared to the many tens of thousands that suffer much more than me. In answer to 'What keeps me awake at night?'; not music, newspapers, or what others may think of me or my views. Or Ultravox. That I can assure you.

The ba(n)d will call the album what they want to, and I'm sure the title and the music will be a fantastic addition to what they've recorded twenty five (plus) years ago. On the throwaway comment that based on what I said the album should be called 'Rubbish' or 'Terrible'. Generally, people who like the band won't be swayed to think it's anything but perfect; anyone who doesn't like the band may not be swayed to think anything otherwise. But the unknowns, including the people who influence those who don't or won't be swayed to think the bands work is not to their taste, they're the ones you want to consider. Imagine if without hearing the material they reverted to type and combined the words 'Monumental' and 'Rubbish', and you'll perhaps see in a wider context why the first of those words is a bad title to even tempt fate with.

I think my time on the forum may be coming to an end with this post; nothing is forever, and something to consider over the next few weeks maybe. Anyway, no matter. Thank you for listening.

All the best,

EG

Previously I suggested "Unity" or "Crystal", but after the Trip to Poundland, Curry crisps and sorry for the last one suggestions (all genius, by the way!), I've realised that I may have been taking this far too seriously. So:

ULTRAVOX - "CATFLAP" (or "CATNIP", I can't decide).

I think my time on the forum may be coming to an end with this post; nothing is forever, and something to consider over the next few weeks maybe.
Take a break if you feel you need to EG but why post a comment like this. bemused Others have done so before now including quite recently & returned a couple of days later!!

After my last suspension I said I wasn't coming back but after a year I thought why not. I saw a couple of things going on I wanted to support & contribute to. I'm using a different username to before & actually not posting as frequently as I used to. A lot of my banter I save for elsewhere as it wasn't always appreciated on here. Probably isn't elsewhere but Havocman can like it or lump it!! :p

On a final note....I'm genuinely pleased to hear your MS in remission. I've known 2 people in the past with MS to differing degrees.

Really sorry to hear that, EG and I hope life takes a turn for the better in the near future.

As for your potential departure from here, I for one would miss your contribution, be it something I agree with or perhaps feel is utter nonsense. But, if you do decide to go, good luck and best wishes.

I'm hopeful E.G will reconsider. When the new album, tour, etc, etc is upon us I'm sure he'll want to be a part of the banter on EV that relates to it. And so he should. I enjoy his output on here. His 'Behind the scenes' work cannot be measured, and is without doubt very highly valued by those who matter to him and those who he matters to.

Keep the faith, mate! wink smile

Rodney, it had honestly never occurred to me - bless yer smile

I'm sure the final title will be suitably sublime, intriguing... and unexpected.

25 years is the silver anniversary, so they could call the album SILVER. It could also refer to their hair color (for those who still have hair).

Re: New Album - Fri, 11 Feb 2011 16:54:00

I like this train of thought. How about this for an album title:

'Bald'

It has many things going for it. It has that whole 'one word album title' thing going on thus making it sound deep and philosophical, and it also has the added benefit that it will resonate with approximately 43% of the male fan base, and the wider population of males over 40. Sure, it possibly won't appeal as much to female fans but, and here's the genius bit, it can have a companion volume of instrumentals and remixes called:

'Hirsute'.

I think the lines are now closed.

Nice idea that, Mr Outside! wink

However, I beg to differ on one count, as the lines have now been re-opened. wink
On the subject of hair, its colour, or lack of it, how about I throw my hat into the ring with a potential album title of my own -

I'VE GOT A BRAND NEW BOBBY CHARLTON 'WRAP OVER' HAIR DO, AND I'M GONNA PLAY WITH IT' smile

Ya know, it might catch on nervouslaugh

Michael Jackson comes to mind with this title. "You know I'm Bald, I'm Bald, you know it, Jamon........."

Maybe "Toupee" or "Syrup" might be more apt...... wink Or, borrowing from Mr C P, "Comb-over"!

Re: New Album - Fri, 11 Feb 2011 19:31:00

To be "nice", the Album could also be called quite diplomatically: "Diminishing Hairlines" (albeit this would maybe suit better to a new Haircut 100 Album?) laugh

Apart from that (hairy) line of thought, I suggest "Fish and Chips" (very British!) wink
The only question is: Who's the "Fish" and who'll be the "Chips"? shocked

Re: New Album - Tue, 03 May 2011 23:55:00

I like the idea of Paths and Angles.

Firstly because the boys went their separate ways but their "paths" have again converged.

Secondly because even though I don't hate the pink album I have to admit it went off at a tangent, and I know it's something that stayed in their minds through the years.

Lucky they didn't call it 'Brilliant' or something then.....
