Hi there!
I just thought we could create a thread where we can tell each other how to play Ultravox-songs ( the chords at last).

I hope we are allowed to do this, Cerise?

If "yes", then I'll post the chords with parts of the lyrics (to see where the chords are played) of some songs between 1980 and 1986 here. And then I hope someone else posts chords of other Ultravox-songs and so on.

May I? confused2

smile

Greetings
Nils

I Remember
The thin Wall
Accent on Youth
The Ascent

Maybe You can post the keys I have to play for the verses of "The Voice"?
It's G7-C/G-G (as You told me in an email), but I don't get it to sound like on the LP.... .

Nils,
Hymn when played live is a tone down from the recorded version...here are the chords of the recorded version....Forgive the dots, they have no significance other than the interpreter strips any white space, so I can't just leave blanks...

Also, I'm doing this at work, so I don't have an instrument to jog my memory. Hopefully its correct - if I've made any bad mistakes I'll edit it.

Intro

Thanks, Mike and Jesper!

Mike, may it be that all "Dm's" but the last in the verses have to be exchanged by "F"?

Jesper: could You edit the post with "Thin Wall" etc. by inserting word wraps (line breaks)? It's difficult to read the thread the way it looks now.

Yes, you are completely right, sorry!
I didn`t realize when I typed it.
You can copy the text into Word (or whatever
you use).
I think I send you the chords this week.

So, it seems we have the whole Collection here, with one valuable exception:
Reap the Wild Wind
(One semitone lower then the original, easier for me to play)
F:Intro

Dm:Reap the wild F:wind
Dm:Reap the wild F:wind

a Dm:finger points to Am:show a scene
Bb:take my C7:hand
Bb/D:take my C7/E:hand, an-
Dm:other face where Am:mine had been
Bb:take my C7:hand
Bb/D:take my C7/E:hand, an-
Dm:other footstep where Am:I once walked
Bb:take my C7:hand
Bb/D:take it C7:all
F:you take my hand and give me...
...the rest to die

C:I have G:seen in
C:Times gone F:by
C:I have G:felt
Csus4:A different shadow on C:the wall
C7:A stranglehold on a certain feeling

Enjoy,
Luca
PS Anyone familiar with Foxx-era chords? I would be most grateful.

Sorry, Nils, just noticed this question....

I'm listening to the whole instrumentation and there is a keyboard line which is playing a repeated figure of F/E/F/D notes which would tie
the chord down to being a Dm....The bass note is F however....
So the chords should really be called Dm/F...

Hi - I don't think Nils's Sleepwalk is right (sorry mate!) Here's my tab of it from beginning to end (including, I think, the right number of D chords). Chords are in CAPITALS/single notes in lower case:

Sleepwalk
======

D D
D D
D D
D D

Verse:
Single notes:
a# c d c a f
a# c d f c
a# c d c a f a
Chord at end: A

D D
D D
D D
D D

Repeat Verse

D D
D D
D D
D D

Repeat Verse

Single notes throughout next section (played on synth on the LP):
a# a e f g e d
a# a e f g e d
e d c# a c# d e e d
e d c# a c# d e e d
a# a e f g e d
a# a e f g e d
ed c# a c# d e e d
ed c# a g a a# a# a

And chords throughout same section:
D D
D D
D D
D D
A A
D D
A A
D D
D D
D D
D D
D D
A A
D D
A A
D D

Repeat Verse X 2

Middle Eight:
A(fret 5) G F E F D D(fret 10)

D D
D D
D D
D D
D D
D D
D D
D D
D D
D D
D D
D D

play out (single notes)
a# a e f g e d
repeat until end

The only bit I have any doubts over are the first F & E chords in the middle eight. Otherwise it sounds spot on.

Enjoy!

Hi there.
Strange things happen....

Just a week days ago, rummaging through old things in the basement I found my old "The Collection" and "Rage in Eden" sheet music. If someone is very interested I could scan & e-mail them.

Today I saw in a little music shop the original "U-Vox" sheet music - tattered, torn and pinkier than ever since it must have been exposed to direct sunlight for a long time. I didn't buy it, though. Is it rare? Anyone interested?

Also, does someone have the chords to FoxxVox song? I would be most grateful.

Ciao,
Luca

Excellent idea for a thread, guys! I've lately been interested in some Ultravox sheet music and at least this gives me a direction. Thanks again for posting these! laugh

Spooky! I found my "The Collection" sheet music the other day as well! Is this some kind of geomantic prophecy, the earth giving up its Ultravox sheet music as an omen of resurrection? ( Answer: No, is it 'eck as like!).

One thing I did notice - and this has caused me some little sadness - is that all these years I've got it wrong: the lyric in The Thin Wall is "They shuffle with a bull-fight grace. . ." and not, as I'd fondly imagined and widely announced, "They shuffle with a bovine grace . . ." . Okay, there's still the cow connection (which is good as far as I'm concerned, I love 'em), but somehow getting the word "bovine" into a top-20 single would have been a superb achievement. Please, somebody tell me it is "bovine" after all! (Okay, maybe this should be in "Misheard Lyrics", but it's not. Ha!).

Hi Luca!
Well.......ahem.....yes..........I would be interested
 . Just in a collector's way of course laugh . How much does it cost?

Österreicher II, don't trust the lyrics of sheet music too far! While "The Collection" says The surface on the visions move... the (correct?) lyrics in the "Rage in Eden" songbook says The sound is on, the visions move... smile

Yes! I noticed that, too, and suffered another of those "I've had it wrong all these years!" moments where I preferred my version to what was claiming to be reality . . . BUT IT ISN'T! HURRAH! As far as I'm concerned, it's as you quote it, and I'm going to stick my finger sin my ears and go LA!LA!LA!LA! VERY LOUDLY should anyone try to tell me differently. Maybe my bovine interpretations are right after all? I must consult higher authorities.

A copy of these would be fantastic if you'd be prepared to scan them.

Nils,
I don't know the exact price since the shop is closed at the moment (summer holidays in Italy).
I can assume it's in the 15 Euro price range. I'll keep you posted.

The "Collection" version also reads, amongst other minor inaccuracies:
"Their power gains again no more"
"with paper smiles discretely calls a message for the nation"
lmao

Yes, 'tis BOVINE, always has been! Strangely enough, I was singing... er... trying* to sing this song in the bathroom of our hotel room in Helsinki. At exactly this line - they shuffle with a bovine grace and glide in syncopation - I stopped and shouted over to Sassy:

"What the f*** does this line mean anyway?! I have never understood it! Do YOU - as a native speaker - understand it?"

Ahhh... relief when it occurred to us that Midge himself had said that the lyrics never meant anything... oufff!

Still... her answer was: "Sounds naughty to meee" (or something like that). biglaugh

DougG - this thread is nothing compared to the Midge passport one; did I miss anything somewhere...? confused

* (it has a "difficult" melody, to put it elegantly) wink

HURRAH! HURRAH! HURRAH! Hurrah for bovine grace! You know, in the context of old films it does make sense, even if Midge said he didn't know what it meant: think of that awkward way that some older actors, more used to stage work, move in old films because the director has told them so to do. It's a little lumpen and deliberate rather than the move coming from any intention of the character in that situation - motivation, dahlings! Cattle do have a certain grace, but it's not the kind of grace that wins gymnastics prizes, it's more homely and reassuring, the kind of grace thta gets them into classic songs of the 80s.

The chords to Wastelands is as follows

Verses(1,2 & 3):

| F#m | - | E | - | D | - | C# | - || x2
then
| Bm D | E | D | - | E - ||

The Chorus is A for 16 bars

Verse 4:

| A | Amaj7 | A7 | A6 | Aaug5 | A |
| D | - D/F# | E | E/G# ||

I've got a partial( 80-90% completed) Midi file of this somewhere if anybody wants to complete it - I've never getting around to finishing it off (couldn't get the cello right and the drums/percussion need some work)
