Hi there! I just thought we could create a thread where we can tell each other how to play Ultravox-songs ( the chords at last). I hope we are allowed to do this, Cerise? If "yes", then I'll post the chords with parts of the lyrics (to see where the chords are played) of some songs between 1980 and 1986 here. And then I hope someone else posts chords of other Ultravox-songs and so on. May I? Greetings Nils

Hi Cerise! Thanks! I just wanted to avoid any possible problems with the rights.
Here we go (I can't guarantee that everything's 100% correct):
PASSING STRANGERS
Fm We were so young, we were too C vain Fm Dance in the dark, sing in the Bb rain Fm Time on our hands, hope in our C hearts
Es?-----------D?-Es? We were talking, passing strangers C#?-----------C?-C#? Moments caught across an empty room Es?-----------D?-Es? Wasted whispers, faded secrets C#?-----------C?-C#? Quickly passes, time goes, time goes by too soon
SLEEPWALK
Dm Sleepwalk Dm Sleepwalk Dm Sleepwalk Dm Sleepwalk Bb Rolling and F falling, I'm Bb choking and F calling Bb Name after F name after A name

WE STAND ALONE
Am (played this way: A-string empty, D-string on the 7th fret, G-string on the 5th fret, B and E empty) The words played on around our heads Perhaps we went too far We'll soldier on until the G end again
Am This clutching hand around my hand So pitiful and frail Makes bleeding hearts begin to G beat again

Refrain: Am F Am F

LOVE'S GREAT ADVENTURE
G Em Standing on my own G It didn't mean that much to me Em I thought I had it all C I didn't see the mystery Am I stood the test of time C And took the step to find D NC Love's great adventure
Link G, D
G Em I spoke a million words G They didn't mean that much to me Em They rang around my head C Like empty tuneless harmonies D G, D, C Love's great adventure's mine_______
Link D, G, D, C, D, Em, Bm, Am
G Em Lying side by side G It didn't mean that much to me Em But starting to enjoy C The poetry and symphonies Am I took it in my stride C And hailed the day I tried D Love's great adventure
Link G, D
G Em A fool who couldn't see G It didn't mean that much to me Em I couldn't understand C That's how the game is meant to be D G Love's great adventure's mine
Link G x 7, Em, Bm, Am, D
Bm Love's great adventure Bm Love's great adventure Bm D Love's great adventure, Oh
Link G
G Em Standing on my own G It didn't mean that much to me Em I thought I had it all C I didn't see the mystery Am I stood the test of time C And took the step to find D G Love's great adventure mine
Another great song from the 80's. Enjoy.

Originally posted by Nils Mike, may it be that all "Dm's" but the last in the verses have to be exchanged by "F"?
Sorry, Nils, just noticed this question.... I'm listening to the whole instrumentation and there is a keyboard line which is playing a repeated figure of F/E/F/D notes which would tie the chord down to being a Dm....The bass note is F however.... So the chords should really be called Dm/F...

Spooky! I found my "The Collection" sheet music the other day as well! Is this some kind of geomantic prophecy, the earth giving up its Ultravox sheet music as an omen of resurrection? ( Answer: No, is it 'eck as like!).
One thing I did notice - and this has caused me some little sadness - is that all these years I've got it wrong: the lyric in The Thin Wall is "They shuffle with a bull-fight grace. . ." and not, as I'd fondly imagined and widely announced, "They shuffle with a bovine grace . . ." . Okay, there's still the cow connection (which is good as far as I'm concerned, I love 'em), but somehow getting the word "bovine" into a top-20 single would have been a superb achievement. Please, somebody tell me it is "bovine" after all! (Okay, maybe this should be in "Misheard Lyrics", but it's not. Ha!).

I'd love these if at all possible please! Simon Originally posted by Luca: Hi there. Strange things happen....
Just a week days ago, rummaging through old things in the basement I found my old "The Collection" and "Rage in Eden" sheet music. If someone is very interested I could scan & e-mail them.
Today I saw in a little music shop the original "U-Vox" sheet music - tattered, torn and pinkier than ever since it must have been exposed to direct sunlight for a long time. I didn't buy it, though. Is it rare? Anyone interested?
Also, does someone have the chords to FoxxVox song? I would be most grateful.
Ciao, Luca

Österreicher II, don't trust the lyrics of sheet music too far! While "The Collection" says The surface on the visions move... the (correct?) lyrics in the "Rage in Eden" songbook says The sound is on, the visions move...

I noticed that, too, and suffered another of those "I've had it wrong all these years!" moments where I preferred my version to what was claiming to be reality . . . BUT IT ISN'T! HURRAH! As far as I'm concerned, it's as you quote it, and I'm going to stick my finger sin my ears and go LA!LA!LA!LA! VERY LOUDLY should anyone try to tell me differently. Maybe my bovine interpretations are right after all? I must consult higher authorities.

The "Collection" version also reads, amongst other minor inaccuracies: "Their power gains again no more" "with paper smiles discretely calls a message for the nation"

Yes, 'tis BOVINE, always has been! Strangely enough, I was singing... er... trying* to sing this song in the bathroom of our hotel room in Helsinki. At exactly this line - they shuffle with a bovine grace and glide in syncopation - I stopped and shouted over to Sassy: "What the f*** does this line mean anyway?! I have never understood it! Do YOU - as a native speaker - understand it?" Ahhh... relief when it occurred to us that Midge himself had said that the lyrics never meant anything... oufff! Still... her answer was: "Sounds naughty to meee" (or something like that). DougG - this thread is nothing compared to the Midge passport one; did I miss anything somewhere...? * (it has a "difficult" melody, to put it elegantly)

HURRAH! HURRAH! HURRAH! Hurrah for bovine grace! You know, in the context of old films it does make sense, even if Midge said he didn't know what it meant: think of that awkward way that some older actors, more used to stage work, move in old films because the director has told them so to do. It's a little lumpen and deliberate rather than the move coming from any intention of the character in that situation - motivation, dahlings! Cattle do have a certain grace, but it's not the kind of grace that wins gymnastics prizes, it's more homely and reassuring, the kind of grace thta gets them into classic songs of the 80s.

We Stand Alone main riff:
---------0--------------------------0------------ . -------0--------------0-----------0------------0- . -----5--------------5-----------5------------0--- . ---7--------------7-----------7------------7----- . -0--------------0-----------0------------5------- . --------------0---------------------------------- .
If this comes out as mess then cut'n'paste it into notepad or similar, with a fixed width font.
