Have we done a 'least favourite John Foxx song' poll recently?

I can't recall. It's hard.
I don't actually dislike any of John's work

Uptown/Downtown from TPOE to start the ball rolling…

From the early ones again most of 'in mysterious ways', from the later years 'shifting city live versions', 'forgotten years', 'smoke', and ray1/ray2'. And i would say any Foxx song that gets the extended re-work and plays for 8 - 10 mins.

Oh yeah... Ray 1/Ray 2 - I thought that was horrid when I first heard it. Though I have to admit, I've warmed to it recently, but it'll never be a favourite!

I don't like Tidal Wave much either.

I'm not so keen on "A long time", I just realized the other day that this song was co-written with the guys from I-Level so I blame them laugh

With the exception of "Stars on fire" and "What kind of girl" I don't really have anything nice to say about the "In mysterious ways" album. The sleeve artwork is great though.

Crash & Burn is too long, IMO the album would have appeared much tighter if "Cinema", "Once in a while", "Ray 1/Ray 2" and "Smoke" had been left off it.

I'd be happy if we don't get any more long songs with a chorus of a short phrase or a few words repeated several times in a monotone. Or songs that recycle a keyboard line from a song from Metamatic or The Garden.

But I'm not naming any particular songs...

To say I've got just about everything John's ever recorded it's surprising how many of his songs fall victim to the 'skip' button on my CD player. A few examples;

Nightlife (I don't care how enthusiastic John and Louis are on the 'live' version, it's still devoid of melody and harmony)
Concrete, Bulletproof, Unmemorable
Smoke
Travel

and looking further back....

City Of Light (the Stars On Fire B side)
Miles Away (though I like Running In Traffic ;-) )
Endlessly (the Golden Section version)

Contrete, Bulletproof, Unbearable goes in my list too.

Though I don't mind Crash.

I played 'Miles Away' to death when it was released. I still adore it.

Funny, I nearly nominated 'Endlessly' but the single version, which I find really... stodgy. The album version is much better (IMHO).

I'd have to say "Stepping Softly" and "This Side of Paradise". Other than those, I can listen to all of "In Mysterious Ways", and "Stars on Fire" and "Morning Glory" are sublime.

Another vote for "Concrete ...".

I'd also have to say, perhaps more controversially, "Drive" and "Your Dress".

Keep it coming people, I'm counting the votes laugh

Fascinatin stuff.
I think Smoke and Ray 1 Ray 2 are the BEST tracks on Crash and Burn. They are different.
But we're not going there on arguing with this.

Least favourite songs.

I'm going to add "Running Across Thin Ice..." because the bass line is infuriating, thumb slapping pants

I´ll go for the very unfoxx Listen to the Drummer . Although the Nation 12 album is really great.

I do like the In Mysterious Ways songs. These were released at an important time of his life and I understand the meaning and the new direction in some of these songs.

Although infinately better than most things anyone else could do, 'Automobile', 'She Robot', and 'Travel' are my least favourite. I don't think there is anything else that I skip over.
I absolutely love 'Ray1/Ray2' - try listening to it really loud, just after the 'Paradise,Paradise' bit, and try not to pull your cheeks in as if your doing a synth solo - I dare you!
Cheers

It's funny how taste varies, even when we all like the artist. I love automobile & she robot, it's very Kraftwerk inspired, but with the Foxx flavour. I never really got into Kraftwek, I find them overly simplistic & repetative, but John does Kraftwerk better than they do. Young man has bad lyrics but I like the music, there's some wonderfull, growly, classic Foxx/Ultravox bass synth in there. I haven't heard the in mysterious ways album, because I don't much like the golden section. It strayed into Chris De Burgh terretory. I blame Zeuss B Whatsit myself, It was maybe an attempt to be commercially pop palattale.

I absolutely love Automobile, Travel, Nightlife and She Robot!

Funny how our tastes vary so.

I really like The Golden Section, but I would nominate Your Dress and Like A Miracle as my LEAST favourites from the album - I skip them nearly every time.

From Nation 12, Listen to the Drummer is just unbearable.

I think John can be forgiven that tho - it's not his song.
The other guys were "called in" to create a B-side to Remember I think, when it was decided that Rhythm King would put out a single.

Ironically it's that track that Nation 12 are most "remember"-ed for...

There aren't many tracks I skip and when I have my MP3 player on shuffle it has an annoying habit of playing my two least favourite tracks.
Concrete bulletproff unlikeable,
Smoke.

Before I get any sarky comments I know I can delete them but the album would be incomplete with out them sad
