Hi
I just got my membership of this great board approved, so I'm keen to say hello!
I'm near Portsmouth on the South of England - I first got into Ultravox in the late 70s, when I bought the Live Retro EP. I was a big punk fan, Sex Pistols mainly - I was going through the discount singles section at Smiths and found Live Retro - I bought it for the cover, because John Foxx looked so punk, I thought it had to be good. I suppose Young Savage was what I'd been hoping for in buying it, very fast and angry, but the other songs, Wild, the Beautiful & The Damned, My Sex and Man Who Dies Everyday really caught my ears - They were different from anything I'd ever heard before. When the band were reborn with Midge Ure, it was a real surprise - I'd bought Forever & Ever by Slik, then the Rich Kids singles (being a loyal Sex Pistols, Glen Matlock fan), and it was very interesting finding this same guy again. Vienna became and has stayed one of my all time favourite albums, with Private Lives being the song I always single out to play.
I'm a musician (I like to think) and play a lot of gigs, either solo or with a band - we play in Germany pretty regularly. I'm a guitarist and bass player with a great love of synths! I have big collection of soft synths, and do a lot of home recording, or rather, I turn it all on, and spend 2 or 3 hours playing around with sounds! I've just submitted a track for the Cover's Competition, which I think is an awesome idea. I recorded a version of Slow Motion. I've known the song for over 25 years, but never tried to play it, and trying to figure it out was a great experience - I didn't think about much else for a few weeks! Anyway, I hope it'll be up shortly and would love to know what you think.
Anyway... it's great to be registered on this great board and be able to talk about such a great band.
Dave.

Thanks Dave for sharing your memories. This got me really much, because I was also a great Pistols-fan. When reading what you wrote down, it is sometimes like a mirror of my own musical biographics. So, a warm welcome from me here on the ULTRAVOX-forum. As soon as Cerise will put your song up in the mediasection, I will give your version a try, can't wait. Slow Motion is a fav of mine too. But I have to disagree to one fact: RAGE In EDEN is the best UVOX-album ever... Maybe there is a chance that we meet in Berlin some day in future. Would be nice to get an info from you. I would like to be there... Andi

Welcome, Dave! I echo all your thoughts, being a huge fan of the Foxx-era myself. "Young Savage" is one of my absolute favourite songs. I love the Live Retro version, and love the three albums from that time, especially the first two. Vienna is also my favourite Ure-era album as well. "Slow Motion" is a great song, and I look forward to hearing your version of it! Enjoy your stay here! Mrs. X

Hi Dave Welcome to the forum. Thanks for letting everyone know how you found Ultravox. I must admit to being a Foxx fan first and foremost. I got into Ultravox by being recommended by a friend saying "you must listen to Systems of Romance". I found the album by chance for sale at 99p and as they say the rest is history. Regards Peter

Hi Again
Thank you all very much! - Yes, I have some of John Foxx's albums - Metamatic when it came out and The Garden, Pleasures of Electricity and Crash & Burn over the past couple of years. I was lucky enough to meet John Foxx at Heathrow in February 2001. It was around 7 in the morning and we were both waiting on different flights. One of the people I was travelling with said that he'd just seen someone who used to be in Ultravox, so I went to see who it was. He was a lot taller than I expected - or thought from the sleeve of Metamatic! I went over and said hello, asked what how he was doing and wished him well (while trying not to appear too stupid for having bothered him in the first place). Then I walked away, and called a couple of friends to tell them!
Thanks for your welcome!
Dave

Hi Dave I've also been lucky enough to meet "my hero" several times at different signing sessions and at Brighton last year. Yes John is very tall (but then most people are taller than me ). He certainly comes across to his fans as a gentleman. Regards Peter
