Took delivery of the "deluxe edition" reissues of Hergest Ridge & Ommadawn this morning. Excellent memories - My dad was only interested in orchestral music , and in the mid 70s the Mike Oldfield "Boxed" collection was just about the only bit of contempory music in his collection. So Mike was really my introduction to guitars and electronic music.

Just to run this past everyone; Oldfield's "Music Of The Spheres" cd is going cheap up the road here - is it any good in your opinions? confused :p

Very much M.O.s attempt to write an orchestral piece ( though there is some acoustic guitar in there ) rather than his normal electronic effects type of recording. Bits are reminicent of the first three albums - if you liked the orchestral version of Tubular Bells you will probably like this.

( BTW - there is also a 2 disc edition which includes a live recording )

I'm amazed at how fresh they sound - like they were recorded this year. And Mike must be the world's most underrated guitarist.

Only just found out he was in a sort of cosmic rock supergroup with the wonderful Kevin Ayers (ex Soft Machine, and still a solo legend) - Kevin Ayers & The Whole World :-

In 1969, Mike joined Kevin Ayers and the Whole World as guitarist. The band featured, as well as Kevin himself, David Bedford, who Mike was to often to work keenly together with in the following years. Mike worked on the albums "Shooting at the Moon", "Whatevershebringswesing", "Confessions of Dr. Dream and other stories" and "June, 1, 1974" (live) as well as appearing on the compilation LP's "The Kevin Ayers Collection" and "Odd Ditties". The Whole World split in 1971, although Ayers continued with other musicians.

There are a few clips on YouTube.

Cheers; yes there's an article on him in one of the music monthlies, isn't there?

Like many I got into Mike through "Tubular Bells"; in my case my father had the 8 track cartridge. :p
