I've had a mad idea. No, really, it's quite daft, a real Craggy Island Numptie Competition of an idea.

How about a category for "The Entry Which Makes a Track From The Pink Thing Sound Most Like an ULTRAVOX Song?"

Okay, I'm sorry. I'll get my coat and then get back in my box.

Why, thank-you kindly, Sir! I look forward to what Denmark's finest can produce. Mind you, Denmark has, as I recall, a most active pig farming culture so you may well be adept at taking sows' ears and making from them silken purses.

Come to think of it, I may even enter myself (enter the competition, I mean. I'm not referring to some dubious near-impossible act of self-pleasure) with a comb-and-paper rendition of The Prize.

Hello Everyone !

At first congratulation to all winners of the competition !

Great tunes made by all of the participants.

About the U-Vox-files....

Yes,of course , I agree- to do something to make the "pink thing" sound more like Ultravox.

Last competition I´ve tried to do it on "Dream on" - but this one songs is one of the songs which are closest to the well known Ultravox sound.

Maybe I try a "Pink thing"-song this year again and hope to make it to "sound like Ultravox"!

Cheers from Oh-oh-oh -Viennnnnn-a

Chris of DYNE-X-SYSTEM

Sadly it is not only the sound in "U-Vox" which isn't ultravoxy at all - it's the songs themselves. You can do "Moon Madness" with the "Rage in Eden"-Equipment and sound, but I doubt that you will be able to make it a real Ultravox tune. Problem is, that a real Ultravox song is not only sounding great, it also needs to be great as a piece of music itself. There are only two songs on that album that I would say are really good songs (the rest is only average in my opinion). One of them is by far no real Ultravox tune (All fall down) and the other one is just too simple overall and may only have been a B-side in times of "Vienna" or "The Voice" (Dream on). Besides those two there is only one more song that I am able to hear more than once wink , and that is the way too kitchy "All in one day".

Anyway: I think we could make those tunes sound sound like Ultravox, but it will clearly appear as a fake because the song itself is too far away from a real Ultravox-composition.

Yeap,

it´s a real challange to make the "Pink thing"
sounds like Ultravox.

But I think it´s not all bad there.

"The prize" is the biggest challange !

Maybe a Competition to make "The pink thing" sounds most like Ultravox !

or-

"U-Vox" remixed, why not .

Should ask Tim Simenon of "Bomb the Bass"....

Cheers,

Chris

I think this is an intriguing idea; I was actually already pondering on whether we should have a theme for next year's comp, and this could be a good one. I'm also thinking that we should male more of it on the site, create some nice graphics to advertise it on the home page and suchlike (when we've finished the EMI releases we should have a lot more time to work on the site).

Let me ponder some more - but in theory, are you all up to a challenge like this? And do we think the whole comp should be turned over to a theme each year to keep it fresh, or to have it running as a separate theme, concurrently?

Let us know your thoughts! laugh

Maybe not a theme every year but as you say, this U-Vox one is an 'intriguing idea'. So even though i dont enter, as a song writer (term used very mild) this appeals to me. Have to agree with some of the comments above too. Its not just the sound, but the arrangements in terms of notes and song structure also. It could be a right old ding dong to reinterpret these tracks.

I agree very very much with Nils and Newvox etc. about the songs, arrangements, sound...
They are very very different from the UV-standard. Another thing (to me) are the lyrics.
Perhaps it`s just me...but they are also very
different I think. Correct me if I´m wrong about it! (or am I only misled by the things mentioned
above).
I think I would be a great idea with a theme too
- perhaps not every year. But I think it would
be a cool idea to have the "pink theme" next
year...and then let us see how things turn out.

To me the only truly great song on that album
is "Dream On" - it`s outstanding I think and
always felt that.

I think it is a good idea; especially if those participating in the competition omit the female backing vocals and brass instruments. icky

The true challenge is to make U-Vox sound like an Ultravox album. So I say, go for it! biglaugh

And there was me looking forward to doing the female vocals.... looks like I've been made redundant! LOL

I think it's an interesting idea... i don't the whole competition should be covers from UVOX, like the theme for the whole competition, but what about an additional section with special award for those brave enough to take up the themed challenge. (sorry if this is what was already suggested)... I'd love to do dream on..... You up for it Jesper? wink

I agree M, thats one of the first things that needs to go.

Im sure Helen yourself and Jesper will do fine again. And anyway, you could still sample your voice with one note, then change the sound and play it as a synth line in place of the female vocals.
