Help! I've got ImpOscar and Oddity plug-ins that I use on the PC and I am trying to get Billy's screamin' lead solo sound - the one he used in Hymn. Can anyone help? I think it was done on the ARP but if anyone has the sound as a loadable patch for the ImpOscan or the Oddity I would be very grateful!
Will play drums in return for help!
Cheers Scott

Hi Scott!
Yes, I can help you! I´ve programmed the leadsound myself on my Oddity - originally Billy used his Arp Odyssey - so send me an email, and I`ll send you a couple of patches for the Oddity. Remember to use some fx: Overdrive/distortion and flanger! All The Best! JesperDK

Hi
I've been trying to emulate this sound for a while too! - I have the Oddity, which I can't really make any sense of!!! My favourite soft synth is the impOSCar.
The closest I've got is to load the Oscar preset bank (after the 10 or so big programmes, I think that the Oscar patch is the original synth defaults), and there is a preset on there called LFOlead or something like that, it's definately a lead!!. If you increase the filter drive to full, turn the effects on, chorus to about half, delay level up to half, glide to around 10pm, wheel bend to full, then play using the wheel bend for dives, and the 'PitchMod' control for the out of control vibrato, I think you get the basic flavour.
The real deal though, is that it's in the player, rather than a patch - Billy Currie would sound awesome playing a Casio VL Tone!

I'm really a drummer, not a keyboard player, but I love messing around and I always loved the screaming lead sound that Billy got and wondered how he did it. The Oddity does kind of screw my head up when I look at the interface - all looks very complicated to me! I am running Oddity through Cubase SX3 - whats the best way to add things like distortion, flange etc? I think a lot of it really is down to the way Billy plays though - he makes the notes just seem to flow and glide into one another - a genius! Many thanks for your help! Scott

Help! Scott

Hey! Of course you can have the sounds Casm - so just send him the sounds!!! Well, loading the sounds: I use Logic and in Logic there is a folder where you can put all your single-sounds (It´s called "plug-in settings" in Logic. There must be such a folder in Cubase too. Try that! If it doesn`t function we will have to solve that problem! All The Best! JesperDK

Well, the efx: You could add the overdrive/distortion as an insert effect on the channel and add the flanger or delay if you wish using the sends/returns.

Hi jesper, Nothing like that in Cubase SX 3 and the Oddity refuses to load these single sounds. Can you send me them as part of a BANK file please - a .PBK file.

Hi Scott! I don`t use entire banks (pbk) but I will create one sometime tomorrow - and then I`ll send it to you. I will also ask one of friends about the Cubase-"problem".
Sleep well! JesperDK

Thanks Jesper. I cant see a way of getting Oddity to load individual sounds like that at all - it all has to be done using banks - these .PBK files. I am using Cubase SX 3 on the PC to run Oddity. Many thanks for your help - can't wait to hear your sounds! Scott

Oddity can only load BANKS of sounds not individual sounds themselves. See pages 6, 7 and 8 of the Oddity user guide.
Unless!! You use Logic - which enables you to load and save individual sounds. Bit of a bummer if you, like me, and running Oddity on the PC thru Cubase SX 3!
Jesper - can you send me those sounds a spart of a bank please? It's the only way I will be able to load them.
Ta Scott

Well....just a comment: I think the sound I´ve programmed is a bit more of a "live-sound" that Billy used...it`s a bit more sharp or piercing or what you call it in english - a little bit better for live-perfomance - cuts through!!! Comments and suggestions etc. are more than welcome JesperDK

Hi everybody! Well, as Flip pointed out in an email, the need of a hardware controller becomes quite obvious here - when you want to play the Oddity the Billy-way! I use a Dopfer Pocket Dial myself (only knobs) but as Flip also points out, it will make a BIG difference in this case - with the Oditty - that the controller has sliders! I think some of the Doepfer`s have that. I´ll (we`ll) have to save some money again! JesperDK

Yeah many thanks Jesper - sounds great! I use a Roland D-10 as a midi controller, but drums are more my instrument. I still love messing around with my keyboards though - especially ImpOscar and Oddity.
....I just need to work out how to add some cool overdrive and flange to jespers cool sound with Cubase SX 3! ....or I could just push the sound through my VS-2480 and add it there - much easier!

The vital part to re-creating his sound is to use square wave for Osc 2, Sync and Ring Mod.
Set VCO 2 to Square - no PWM, switch on Sync, raise the sliders for ring mod and Osc 2 into the filter mixer, set ADSR to the Filter Voltage control, Sustain should be max, AR to the VCA, and ADSR into VCO2 Voltage control.
Open your VCF to 75%(ish)... you should now hear something... Hold a note and raise the VCO2 VC Mod (ADSR) slider up... Sound familiar? Try lowering the Frequency of VCO 2 also - that helps.
A bit of overdrive and flanger helps (Specifically Electo Harmonix Electric Mistress).
I tend to find that the Oddity is too "static" sounding - the original Odyssey's ring mod used to make a continual grungy gurggle (at least mine did!), something I can't re-create on the Oddity, but can on the Roland JP8000 (which is a superb Oddy replacement).
Hope this helps
