I thought it might be a cool idea to put together a definitive list of instruments used album by album - questions about "what was used on such and such" seem to pop up now and again so if all the info is in 1 place, it can be referred to in future.

I don't just mean synths but types of guitars used (fx also if anyone knows), drums, basses, even microphones if anyone knows.

If we take an album at a time, posting suggestions and any discussion thereof (particular tracks that stand out with a particular instrument or perhaps someone has posted a suggestion and you think its wrong? etc), I'll then collate the info into 1 thread which can be referred to in future.

So...does anyone have any info on what was used on the first album? Please keep talk of future albums to separate threads which can be created when this one is exhausted.

Thanks for your input! smile

Great thread! Could avoid lots of question and will be very helpful when completet.

I have a detailed list started at home, but I'll try to write it down from memory.

Vienna:
Chris - Minimoog (basslines), Yamaha CS 40m (??, the one used during the refrain of "Vienna")

Midge - Yamaha SS 30 (the Ultravox main synth I think, used for every stringsound), Yamaha CS 40m (e.g. at the beginning of "Western Promise" and during the later parts of "Sleepwalk"), Yamaha SG 2000 electric guitar

Billy - ARP Odyssey (nearly all solos), Yamaha CS 80 (e.g. during Mr.X), Oberheim OB-X (?), Yamaha CP 70 or 80 (piano), Yamaha SS 30

Warren - Roland CR 78

no time anymore, will post more later the day

Nils, this thread is about the very first album only - we can keep the Vienna info for another thread. In fact, I'll post a new thread for Vienna (and other albums) now.

Can people please keep to the one album in their posts and also in the correct thread? It'll make collating the info a lot easier.

Cheers! smile

Nils - I'll add your post to the Vienna thread. More info when you get time will be very welcome. Thank you!

Oooops, I didn't realize that there's a thread for each album..... . I just read "Equipment" and "Ultravox" and that's it..... rolleyes .

So I think You can delete my post here (or Cerise may do it), because it doesn't make any sense and just confuses people.

But I think I can provide some information here, too. As far as I have seen Billy used an Elka Rhapsody on the first album, didn't he?

According to Billy Currie's website:

Grand piano, Wurlitzer (electric piano?), String machine (the Elka rhapsody 610 I guess), organ (dunno what model?) and (Hohner) clavinet.

Brian Eno was apparently co-producing some of the tracks featured on this album and brought along his Minimoog which was used on "My sex" and "Slip Away".
