Not too sure on specific instruments (Ody, obviously...), but speaking to John in 2002-ish, he did tell us that "we just put everything through Marshall amps".

And judging from the photos elsewhere on this here site, the vocals on "just for a moment" were recorded with an Electrovoice RE-20

The story he told us about writing "Dislocation" was pretty cool, too. Apparently, on turning up at Conny's studio, they found that there'd been a German folk band in the day before, recording folk songs but using Conny's synths. The big analogue sequencer still had one of their sequences on it, so as you would, they sparked it up and played it. Then one of the band (Billy?) accidentally slowed it down to half speed and what came out became the basis for "Dislocation".

Does any of this count?

Arp Odyssey w/Arp sequencer
EMS VCS 3 (unsure)
Elka Rhapsody 610 string-machine
Roland TR-77 rhythm box
and possibly also an RMI electronic piano (Billy Currie definitely used one during some early/mid '78 gigs at least).

Yeah, the gear for Systems was pretty basic but then it was 1978. Chris's Mini-Moog really starts to come into its own on the album, on songs like Slow Motion and Quiet Men especially.

There's that picture of Billy working with the ARP sequencer on Dislocation. He said years later that the 'drum' sounds on that song were actually processed Odyssey sounds. The Elka Rhapsody string sounds were thought of as a 'cold' sound whereas the CS80 were more 'warm'.

The Rhapsody can also be heard a fair bit on the early Visage stuff, particularly In The Year 2525 and bits of the first album. I think Mr Currie had it for years!

Hi,

From where have you got the info that Chris Cross would've used a Minimoog on this album?

Aside for its occasional use on their debut album "Ultravox" (on the Brian Eno produced stuff)I always thought the Minimoog debuted on the "Vienna" album.

As for the Elka Rhapsody 610 string-machine; it's all over John Foxx' "Metamatic" album too.

cheers,
Micke

I was lucky enough to see them at the Marquee Club, just after Systems was released... Chris spent quite a bit of time behind... a Mini Moog, besides nothing else makes that sort of sound...very distinctive smile

Aha, so he did use a Minimoog that early on after all..one learns something new every day.

Then we'll have to add it to the gear-list for that album.

(strangely enough, Warren Cann doesn't mention a word about the Minimoog when he talks about the making of the "Systems of romance" album in the lenghty "History" interview with Jonas WŚrstad. He does mention the Odyssey and the Rhapsody though...)

If you see any of their perfomances from this time (on the Mine for Life DVD's) you'll see Chris using the Minimoog for the opening drone / sweep noise from Slow Motion - sheer class!!

Yes that's correct but according to the interview with Jonas WŚrstad, Warren didn't aquire a CR-78 (he didn't use a CR-68 afaik) until right before the recording of the "Vienna" album in the spring of 1980.

You're right. That performance was from the Reading festival (August 1978) and Chris was indeed using a Minimoog for the opening drone/sweep noise as well as for the beefy bassline/sounds in "Slow Motion" and "Quiet Man".

It sounded very similar to the sound heard on the Lp versions of these tracks (recorded in June/July '78) so I think we can conclude that Chris did use a Minimoog on this album.
