What is this song about?! Anyone?

It's probably my favourite track on The Pleasures of Electricity, but it has such an odd lyric. I was wondering if there was some Ballardian reference in there.

It just seems to be a song about an encounter in an elevator, but I wondered if there's more to it than that?

I've struggled to find any interviews with John from this period where he talks about the album in any detail.

I hope he plays some of it on tour.

I just looked at the lyrics and the only thing I can assume like you Alex, The Falling Room is a lift and John is talking about a stranger walking in.
For me it's one of the best songs on POE and John puts lots of emotion into it when he's singing it.

Would be nice if john did something on his tour from POE but I can't imagine it.

I reckon 'The Falling Room' is about observing change in the world around us, and the unpredictability of what we might find outside if we stepped out of it.
Kind of like an Alice in Wonderland situation, as she falls through a room inside the rabbit hole? We catch glimpses of things as we pass, catching images. Typical I think of John's lyrics from the point of view of an 'outsider', moving through lives and cities collecting images, sounds and memories for a flashback movie?
Like a car, or a moving stairway - a lift would be a 'safe' vantage point.
There would be an illusion of stability in a room that was actually falling too. Like the elevator.

"The party goes on behind elevator doors
While the elvator plummets from the sixty-ninth floor"

from Fear in The Western World.
Another elevator reference.

Maybe this is a load of r*bbish. Just a few thoughts.
Thanks for flagging up the song though. I just played it again and agree it is one of TPOEs better tracks. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="cool.gif" />

I also love this track, but it always makes me imagine the twin towers on 9/11. Being inside, when it starts to collapse below, the room falling away... *shiver*

LOL
Hilariously literal interpretations there ("it's about an elevator")
lmao

I imagined John was being slightly more meta-phorical (or not meta-nymic) ;-)

It could even be a static room but the people meeting there and situations is 'falling'.

Love...

Underworld...

Reputations...

That kind of thing. The only thing you can be sure of with Johns lyric's is this decoding may take decades smile

A lot of tracks on this album bring back memories of 9/ll for me as I remember going to Johns gig in London the weekend after this happened when I think POE was released. Lyrics from Cities of Light 5, The Falling Room and Quiet City in particular.....
