As the original topic was sadly closed, but as there's certainly something to talk about (4 great live tunes - for example!), I've decided to start a new clean topic about it now, where people can discuss about the new EP again (but hopefully not about personal gripes, which have nothing to do with the music or the release in itself in any way!)

Let the talk continue now, fellow Ultravox fans! smile

Oh... by the way, did I already mentioned that I really enjoy listening to the 4 live tunes of the EP? wink

Appears release has been now been put back to 5th May. There must be some relevance to it being released on a Thursday, rather than a Monday smile

A wee review wink

White China is too slow in my opinion. The 1984 version is much stronger and a tad faster. Still love the updated version, compared to the rather cheesy album version.

New Europeans is simply perfect. Great guitar sound and Cann's drumkit sounds much better compared to the Roundhouse gig.

Herr X sounds great, but there is something with Cann's voice. Like he is not there in Berlin. Sounds overdubbed, which is, of course, not the case, but still...

Love's Great Adventure is together with New Europeans my favourite. Just perfect. Love the backing track and the ending.

Was Herr x not overdubbed? I assumed it would be.

New Europeans stands out for me. It did on the tour, and the mix is fantastic. Not a big fan of White China though it is a good version, LGA good too though it doesn't seem to convey the energy it had when you saw it performed.
Confess haven't bothered to download Herr X as unlike most it is not my favourite, and already have the English version.
But I am waiting for the vinyl copy anyway!

Agreed.Set movements version of White China from 1984 much more potent.
We were at the Berlin gig last year and Warren definately did the Mr X vocal in English(much to our surprise) so yes,a cut'n'paste job.

I don't find it surprising that he didn't sing live in a foreign language. That takes a high level of language competence I would imagine.

Yes I've downloaded it. Good old Itunes. Think it's great actually. But I do miss holding the thing in your hands. (the disc that is... just for clarification laugh ) Old fashioned maybe, but true.

Having read the previous post, and with all the faffing around with the physical release, is it any wonder people like me just go to Itunes now?

I was never a fan of White China. Either the album version or the 1984 live version. But I quite like the "Moments" one. It's raw and broken down. I see the song in a new light and that can only be good.

Herr X... well its a bit of a collectors thing I guess. I thought I had read somewhere that Warren had actually done it in german live, or part of it at least. So thanks for the info B.

New Europeans is great and so is Love's Great Adventure. Well worth the 3 ish (whatever it was) download cost. So buy it guys!! What are you waiting for?? Oh yes.... the physical release!! confused2

Nothing beats walking into a record shop though and picking up a 12" vinyl and bringing it home. Opening it, especially if it was a gatefold sleeve with lyrics!! Rare in those days.

Oh well! how times change.

if you are close to a participating store , there is lots of limited edition vinyl (including a Mirrors 7" ) being produced for "record shop day" on April 16th

Apart from when it is someone's birthday...is there any day in the year when it isn't something or other day?!!

This is the one of the ones I approve of though. It's very sad the decline of record shops over the years.

Where I am now charity shops are practically the only places to go if you want vinyl. The legendary Croydon Beanos & Sellanby I used to go to are 2 to hit the dust in recent times. Will have to have a look round Brighton sometime to see if one of my old haunts is still there.

Hmmm. Great post david, but as usual Shropshire is sadly absent. I only really remember one independant record shop in Shrewsbury ever!! I actually bought "If I Was" in clear vinyl there on the day the single was released!

But for me, it was upstairs at Woolworths for LP's and singles (right next to the toy section). Also upstairs at John Menzies... but I don't know what ever happened to them? Why were they always upstairs???

Anyway we digress.... this is supposed to be about Moments... Played it on the way home from work in the car. Yep great at full volume!! If anyone was on the M54 earlier today next to some fool playing New Europeans at an ear splitting volume.... yep! That was me!!

They sold their retail business to WH Smith in the mid-90s , and concentrated more on distribution /logistics. Currently heavily involved in airport cargo movements.

As I recall, there were two Menzies branches in West Bromwich and one of them had a record section downstairs! I bought the Krafwerk Autobahn album there.

But I loved the upstairs one particularly. Up there they had the records AND Subbuteo! Heaven. Happy days too.

Yep that's how the MP pronounces it but generally he is referred to as Ming.

I probably misheard my Scottish Grandfather when he told me it was Menazes...I had only met him for the first time in my life at the age of about 14!! biglaugh

Yeh but I bet he wouldn't raise the 40million odd in an auction house that the mose famous vase sale took place in near West Ruislip tube station!!

Mind you...bet the auctioneer could raise a few quid for knackering his gavel (yeeeessss Pete amuse yourself here), at the end of the sale when he gave it a hefty thwack!! biglaugh

The actual answer is that the z replaced an earlier letter yogh , which represented various forms of 'g'.

Thank you David!! Brilliant as ever! That explains why the old John Menzies shop is now a WH Smith!!

Mingies, menazies whatever!! The old gaelic "g" is correct though. Z came a lot later.

Anyway... isn't this thread supposed to be about "moments"??

They also have the Lyon show from 1983, Quartet Tour, plus a few other goodies.

I downloaded 'Moments' from i-tunes - I still have the CD/vinyl on order but couldn't wait any longer!! Overall, not as good a sound as the live RTE CD imho, but track wise New Europeans and Loves Great Adventure are crackers, the opening guitar on New Europeans - spine freezing!!

Btw - was the 'Thin Wall' mystery ever solved?

Just read synthpop's comments in the "forum closing" thread. I know things got a bit out of hand in the first "moments" thread, but I don't see anything wrong with this one to be honest.

Just some memories and some humour. Ok went a bit off track, I admit, but I have apologised for that. My fault entirely.

Just need some more peeps to comment on the Moments EP... well? come on then!!

I don't blame you for any of that, but if a thread goes a bit too much in an off topic direction (as this one did after some time in my honest opinion), it all too often gets out of hand, as several threads not only in this forum have proven in the past. shocked
Off topic stuff can be posted as a part of a topic, but should never become its only point of discussion in my honest opinion.

Coming back to the thread's topic now: I'm also curious to know what has happened to the proposed bonus track "The Thin Wall" for the download version of the EP? confused
No online retailer seems to have or know anything about it. bemused
Change of plan, as I suppose...

I actually going to wait for the CD/Vinyl version- I'm really looking forward to playing a new Vox record for the first time since 1987. I just hope they follow this through and bring out the album as a record as well. Somehow its the right way to listen to Ultravox...

I only downloaded 2 tracks (New Europeans/White China) as I'm waiting for my CD/Vinyl - however, I agree re the sound if I'm completely honest - I thought RTE better. Not sure why that is as I thought round 2 of the shows were much better and more energetic than the Roundhouse, IMO. I thought aside Sheffield (there are no words...a show I'll NEVER forget) - Berlin was the best show of the tour - the sound in the venue was FANTASTIC. Perhaps we just need to hear it on vinyl! laugh

(ps IS that where it was recorded? Berlin?)

Not sure what happened to the Thin Wall! A real shame! One of my faves!

......and now - opening up an old, old debate - now that I've heard the recorded live version of New Europeans I'm still not certain with the lyrics!!!

The lyrics to New Europeans appeared in Smash Hits back in 1982. They may have been in the very first one I bought with Altered Images on the cover.

lyrics are in the "definitve edition" CD booklets

http://www.ultravox.org.uk/cgi-bin/ImageFolio31/imageFolio.cgi?direct=EMI_Definitive_Edition_CDs

Though obviously this doesnt guarantee that Midge hasnt changed them over the years.

Please tell me this isn't the real artwork!!? I was hoping it was just a template design whilst the band sorted out something, well, befitting of Ultravox. Sorry to say it's hideous!

Maybe they're saving the proper design for inside the gatefold sleeve.

IMO the artwork does not look bad. Furthermore, we need to hold it in our hands in order to finally judge the quality.

Personally I think the artwork is fab and having seen the rest of it too ... well that really is fantastic! Surprised to read anything negative about it tbh but guess folk have different tastes so it'd be impossible to please everyone. It's going to be a superb package to own ...

My view is what are you buying an album of any kind for ....the music or the artwork?!!! bemused

If you are downloading it anyway (gyyyyaaaakkkk confused2

I suppose you could compare it with buying a book. If you don't like the artwork on the cover would that deter you from not buying the book?!! Now what IS that saying about not judging.... biglaugh

I've just checked my country's Amazon directory for "The Thin Wall" (and also for "The Thin Line"), but it doesn't appear there until now. shocked
Hope it will appear soon there too, as I'm not going to use "Egg"-Tunes, sorry.

If I buy a physical copy of "something" (Album, EP, Single or whatever it is) these days, I do it ONLY for 2 reasons: The Artwork and for my collection and its value for it. smile
By the way, most physical Vinyl copies that I've bought in recent years were only played ONCE, if ever! wink
I buy the download version to listen to the music, as it's the most convenient way for me, anyway.
I know that a lot of music collectors do it just the same way or similar like me.

p.s.: I also don't really like the front cover of the EP, sorry. shocked

It arrived with this morning's post. It's nicely made with a textured thick card gatefold sleeve and with the writing embossed on the front. One sleeve contains the red vinyl record while the other has a four page booklet containing photographs of John Foxx-style urban landscapes with examples of the song lyrics printed across them in sympathy with the architectural lines and perspectives. The CD is housed on a small foam mount on the inside of the gatefold.

Haven't played it yet but looking forward to it!

Same with me although in my case it was once or never. I used to collect the number one singles but didn't always listen to them so I probably have quite a few 'mint' copies. Probably like you I've got a few vinyl I bought & only played once!!

My copy has arrived today too.

For those of you with concens about the artwork (myself included), it's much MUCH better than it looked in the photos, which gave the impression it was knocked out in photoshop in ten minutes.

I've not listened to it yet but, just for the packaging, it was certainly worth the wait and cost.

I thought the artwork was disappointing and the booklet was a complete waste of time. No photos, no sleeve notes- just a few random lyrics and artwork. I wasn't overly impressed with the artwork either- it kind goes against the Ultravox minimalist atheistic. This one there is too much going on- although I did like the horsehead label pin on the suit- nice touch.

As for the EP it was great White China is far superior to its messy 1984 counterpart, New Europeans rocked (as always) and Love's Great Adventure has more energy than its studio counter part. I don't see the point in Herr X though. I didn't see the point when I bought the Vienna 12" either but then it was what it was - an oddity as a bonus track on a 12" single. But giving 1/4 of an EP over to it was a bit of a waste- perhaps it should have been the download only track in place of The Thin Wall.

Agree the booklet is a waste of space, I like the rest though.
I am also in agreement about Herr X, but then I'm not a big fan of Mr X in the first place where I know a lot of people are.
Was the version of The Thin Wall during RTE2 that much different to the one on the orginal RTE DVD and CD?

Most important thing for me is having versions of the 3 tracks that were 'new' the second time around. Especially New Europeans which is just perfect.

so now you have it - anyone any the wiser as to which bit of it qualifies as "marquis" ?

I missed the postman this morning by 15 minutes and so have a small "you where out" card to look at until Tuesday.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the whole 'Marquis' thing is a typo gone mad / urban legend.

Unless somebody know's something I don't (and let's face it, with this beard: who could!?) there is no such thing. There is no design technique, printing method or style of that name.

Eventually the person responsible will be found and subjected to a weeks worth of some of Jeremy Kyle's shoutier episodes.

You hear me, crazy, non-checking PR-type person..?

Super!

Urban legend? Ha, I like that! perhaps it's meant to refer to the cover card stock?

Haven't opened the package, as I need to fly out of the door in a minute, but the poster's rather cool - Mr. X in the flesh, as it were.

More thoughts later.

Mine arrived this morning also.
I think that the artwork is fantastic and the care that has been taken with this release is excellent. The red vinyl was an inspired touch and the whole EP is quality.
I am very happy with the EP and it was worth the wait.
The free print from Townsend was also a step up in quality from their previous attempts.
In a nutshell, First Class !!!! mexican

Mine too arrived this morning and it looks very good. Yet to play it 'cos got a toilet in bits awaiting repair but later maybe.
The presentation is good and could be used as format for the new album. It has been worth the wait and will now need to purchase another frame for the artwork. With regard to the critiques...it's something new from Ultravox. Enjoy!

Moments from Eden package is here and have to say that I'm very impressed. It's so classy! A great collector's item. The music is absolutely stonkingly brilliant of course. So much energy in Ultravox live music and this EP captures that so well. Love Rian Hughes fantastic artwork ... very Ultravox but 21st century style! And love the red vinyl!

BTW: without wishing to open an enormous can of Oligochaetae here, doesn't anyone else find it a terrible shame that, even in the 21st Century, we still have to shave the hindquarters of over 100 young Elk to produce one side of a 10" vinyl EP?

So many shades of wrong...

I'd assumed that marquis artwork could perhaps be referring to a style of comic book art influenced by Guy Davis's The Marquis artwork. I could be way off track of course ......

PS Probably turn out it was the type of paper lol!
Been playing it for hours now and still not ready to change the music.....

If correct: you win a cuddly Billy Currie!

I still reckon it's typographic randomness, but good reference call all the same.

One wonders if part of their forthcoming marketing strategy is to introduce total porkies into claims for packaging and releases.

If that's the case I can't wait for the album:

"Contains powdered John Foxx"

"Scented with the tears of Angels" etc

Mine arrived this morning and I love it.
The fantastic artwork, the red vinyl and the exclusive artwork print, all of it pure class - thanks guys.

Also, with this arriving this morning, it links nicely into a post I made yesterday regarding fav album covers http://www.Ultravox.org.uk/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=10;t=002045 laugh

Mine arrived on Saturday and it's great. Simple as that.

The only downside . . . my print was stuck to a blob of glue on the inside of the packaging and so doesn't really look very nice anymore!

Now if Townsend would be nice enough to send me a replacement I'd be dead impressed!
