As the original topic was sadly closed, but as there's certainly something to talk about (4 great live tunes - for example!), I've decided to start a new clean topic about it now, where people can discuss about the new EP again (but hopefully not about personal gripes, which have nothing to do with the music or the release in itself in any way!)

Let the talk continue now, fellow Ultravox fans! smile

Oh... by the way, did I already mentioned that I really enjoy listening to the 4 live tunes of the EP? wink

Appears release has been now been put back to 5th May. There must be some relevance to it being released on a Thursday, rather than a Monday smile

A wee review wink

White China is too slow in my opinion. The 1984 version is much stronger and a tad faster. Still love the updated version, compared to the rather cheesy album version.

New Europeans is simply perfect. Great guitar sound and Cann's drumkit sounds much better compared to the Roundhouse gig.

Herr X sounds great, but there is something with Cann's voice. Like he is not there in Berlin. Sounds overdubbed, which is, of course, not the case, but still...

Love's Great Adventure is together with New Europeans my favourite. Just perfect. Love the backing track and the ending.

Was Herr x not overdubbed? I assumed it would be.

New Europeans stands out for me. It did on the tour, and the mix is fantastic. Not a big fan of White China though it is a good version, LGA good too though it doesn't seem to convey the energy it had when you saw it performed.
Confess haven't bothered to download Herr X as unlike most it is not my favourite, and already have the English version.
But I am waiting for the vinyl copy anyway!

Agreed.Set movements version of White China from 1984 much more potent.
We were at the Berlin gig last year and Warren definately did the Mr X vocal in English(much to our surprise) so yes,a cut'n'paste job.

I don't find it surprising that he didn't sing live in a foreign language. That takes a high level of language competence I would imagine.

Yes I've downloaded it. Good old Itunes. Think it's great actually. But I do miss holding the thing in your hands. (the disc that is... just for clarification laugh ) Old fashioned maybe, but true.

Having read the previous post, and with all the faffing around with the physical release, is it any wonder people like me just go to Itunes now?

I was never a fan of White China. Either the album version or the 1984 live version. But I quite like the "Moments" one. It's raw and broken down. I see the song in a new light and that can only be good.

Herr X... well its a bit of a collectors thing I guess. I thought I had read somewhere that Warren had actually done it in german live, or part of it at least. So thanks for the info B.

New Europeans is great and so is Love's Great Adventure. Well worth the 3 ish (whatever it was) download cost. So buy it guys!! What are you waiting for?? Oh yes.... the physical release!! confused2

Nothing beats walking into a record shop though and picking up a 12" vinyl and bringing it home. Opening it, especially if it was a gatefold sleeve with lyrics!! Rare in those days.

Oh well! how times change.

if you are close to a participating store , there is lots of limited edition vinyl (including a Mirrors 7" ) being produced for "record shop day" on April 16th

Apart from when it is someone's birthday...is there any day in the year when it isn't something or other day?!!

This is the one of the ones I approve of though. It's very sad the decline of record shops over the years.

Where I am now charity shops are practically the only places to go if you want vinyl. The legendary Croydon Beanos & Sellanby I used to go to are 2 to hit the dust in recent times. Will have to have a look round Brighton sometime to see if one of my old haunts is still there.

Hmmm. Great post david, but as usual Shropshire is sadly absent. I only really remember one independant record shop in Shrewsbury ever!! I actually bought "If I Was" in clear vinyl there on the day the single was released!

But for me, it was upstairs at Woolworths for LP's and singles (right next to the toy section). Also upstairs at John Menzies... but I don't know what ever happened to them? Why were they always upstairs???

Anyway we digress.... this is supposed to be about Moments... Played it on the way home from work in the car. Yep great at full volume!! If anyone was on the M54 earlier today next to some fool playing New Europeans at an ear splitting volume.... yep! That was me!!

They sold their retail business to WH Smith in the mid-90s , and concentrated more on distribution /logistics. Currently heavily involved in airport cargo movements.

As I recall, there were two Menzies branches in West Bromwich and one of them had a record section downstairs! I bought the Krafwerk Autobahn album there.

But I loved the upstairs one particularly. Up there they had the records AND Subbuteo! Heaven. Happy days too.

Yep that's how the MP pronounces it but generally he is referred to as Ming.

I probably misheard my Scottish Grandfather when he told me it was Menazes...I had only met him for the first time in my life at the age of about 14!! biglaugh

Yeh but I bet he wouldn't raise the 40million odd in an auction house that the mose famous vase sale took place in near West Ruislip tube station!!

Mind you...bet the auctioneer could raise a few quid for knackering his gavel (yeeeessss Pete amuse yourself here), at the end of the sale when he gave it a hefty thwack!! biglaugh

The actual answer is that the z replaced an earlier letter yogh , which represented various forms of 'g'.

Thank you David!! Brilliant as ever! That explains why the old John Menzies shop is now a WH Smith!!

Mingies, menazies whatever!! The old gaelic "g" is correct though. Z came a lot later.

Anyway... isn't this thread supposed to be about "moments"??

They also have the Lyon show from 1983, Quartet Tour, plus a few other goodies.

This message will self destruct in 3 seconds!!! shhhhh!

I downloaded 'Moments' from i-tunes - I still have the CD/vinyl on order but couldn't wait any longer!! Overall, not as good a sound as the live RTE CD imho, but track wise New Europeans and Loves Great Adventure are crackers, the opening guitar on New Europeans - spine freezing!!

Btw - was the 'Thin Wall' mystery ever solved?

Just read synthpop's comments in the "forum closing" thread. I know things got a bit out of hand in the first "moments" thread, but I don't see anything wrong with this one to be honest.

Just some memories and some humour. Ok went a bit off track, I admit, but I have apologised for that. My fault entirely.

Just need some more peeps to comment on the Moments EP... well? come on then!!

I don't blame you for any of that, but if a thread goes a bit too much in an off topic direction (as this one did after some time in my honest opinion), it all too often gets out of hand, as several threads not only in this forum have proven in the past. shocked
Off topic stuff can be posted as a part of a topic, but should never become its only point of discussion in my honest opinion.

Coming back to the thread's topic now: I'm also curious to know what has happened to the proposed bonus track "The Thin Wall" for the download version of the EP? confused
No online retailer seems to have or know anything about it. bemused
Change of plan, as I suppose...

I actually going to wait for the CD/Vinyl version- I'm really looking forward to playing a new Vox record for the first time since 1987. I just hope they follow this through and bring out the album as a record as well. Somehow its the right way to listen to Ultravox...

I only downloaded 2 tracks (New Europeans/White China) as I'm waiting for my CD/Vinyl - however, I agree re the sound if I'm completely honest - I thought RTE better. Not sure why that is as I thought round 2 of the shows were much better and more energetic than the Roundhouse, IMO. I thought aside Sheffield (there are no words...a show I'll NEVER forget) - Berlin was the best show of the tour - the sound in the venue was FANTASTIC. Perhaps we just need to hear it on vinyl! laugh

(ps IS that where it was recorded? Berlin?)

Not sure what happened to the Thin Wall! A real shame! One of my faves!

......and now - opening up an old, old debate - now that I've heard the recorded live version of New Europeans I'm still not certain with the lyrics!!!

The lyrics to New Europeans appeared in Smash Hits back in 1982. They may have been in the very first one I bought with Altered Images on the cover.

Though obviously this doesnt guarantee that Midge hasnt changed them over the years.
