I saw the video to 'Lose All Sense of Time' for the first time last night - and how silly it is! But I was wondering if anybody could tell me who directed it?

I was wondering if it was one of the people who worked with Peter Gabriel on his mid-80s videos, as it's very similar in style.

Ta!

It is utterly hilarious in a quite Terry Gilliamesque way.

I DEMAND that it be released on an official DVD right now!

Yeah, it's very Python.

When the croissants or whatever they are waddled out from under the bed, I almost fell off my chair!

i have a hazy recollection of what i was told, but knowing someone who was around the animation studio at the time, i think you will find that john did it. he was experimenting with animating his collages. I may be wrong but at the time i think it was done all digitally rather than with conventional film, which made it a relatively new way of doing stop frame animation. In his defence i think its an attempt to go in a new direction with it. maybe it didnt work, but it was a worthwhile attempt none the less

When i met john at sister ray last year he told me that he had just bought all his videos from virgin. Hopefully the virgin video will get a re-realease at some point providing the masters are still in good condition. Really love all of johns promos although i think the record company were more keen on them than john.

On the other hand, maybe he bought them to withhold them.

I'm fairly sure as he's on record as saying most of them were nothing to do with him, at least on a creative level.

The thick plottens...

Personally I would love all his videos to be available on DVD. I always thought it strange that videos were made for songs that were never released as singles( He's A Liquid, Lose All Sense Of Time etc)but quite a number of his singles apparently had no videos made for them.(Europe After The Rain,Your Dress etc).

Yeah, it always seems like such a ludricous waste that so many videos were made in the 80s, costing thousands and thousands of pounds, and you basically never get to see them -
only with YouTube recently is this beginning to change.

I mean it's now revealed that the Metamatic cover art is merely stills from the He's A Liquid video! So that was obviously all planned and shot in advance before the album was finished!

John does seem to be fairly good at getting all his old archive of backcatalogue released for people to hear, so I'd hope he wouldn't be too precious about releasing the videos - I imagine if he paid Virgin to get them back, he must have some plans for them - cos I doubt very much there was much danger of Virgin releasing them?

I dunno... I suspect he bought them from Virgin for the very purpose of making sure they never got released again. John is, as you point out, happy to let us hear music that may have been recorded some years ago - but a piece of music like 'Translucence' is a rather more timeless artefact than, say, the promo video for 'Dancing Like A Gun'. Given that John's been pumping the work out lately and his profile has, correspondingly, been significantly raised (he seems to be on every other page of this month's MOJO), he may well have bought these videos to pre-empt the possibility of Virgin noticing that he's back on the radar screen and releasing them to make a few bob...

Of course, I hope you're right and I'm wrong - I'd like to see some of those videos in better picture quality than we have available to us now from video tape...

Personally, I think they likely fall below John's quality threshold.

Plus there may be a small 'embarrassment' factor...

John has never seemed enourmously comfortable in front of the lens and these videos - particularly the quick 'knock-offs' such as Endlessly may make him a little uncomfortable.

Hypothetically (and to do a complete 180 against what I've just said!) nice though it may be for completists (such as us) to have them, the cost of issuing a DVD collection is probably prohibitive against the possible revenues returned.

Just FYI.

I don't know about 'revealed'...but the cover shot of JF looking into the light does seem to be an on-set shot from the video shoot.

I understand that John's contact with Virgin Records was such that after a pre-determined period of time everything he supplied (tapes, videos, etc) was returned - so Virgin would never be able to re-issue any of his music or promotional videos.

In fact, a few years back I visited the offices of Virgin Records with John specifically to recover all of his master tapes. A subsequent trip was made to collect all of his videos.

I believe that the video to He's a Liquid was shot after the Metamatic album cover. The video was just set up to resemble the previous shoot.

Oh I see!
Well so that was all just the product of my fevered imagination. smile

I think the video to DANCING LIKE A GUN (well, what little I saw on You Tube) is ace, though smile

Whatever John does decide to do with the master tapes we have no control over. Then again probably most ardent fans own the original video tape (like myself) or own copies of fan produced DVD copied from the video or seen it on youtube.

Yes if John were to re-release the video's taken from the original tape on DVD I'd certainly buy it. Oh by the way John it'll be nice in 5.1 sourround. lurve

If John was to release the videos etc on DVD - would there be a chance of also putting on the TOTP's performances? Or the opening credits to 20th Century Box* - which if I remember (very vaguely) had a skeletal, almost demo version 20th Century as it's theme tune.

Talking of videos/DVDs were any of John's Live performances captured from The Golden Section tour on film?

*early 80s 'yoof' TV thingy

There was a Spanish TV programme from 1983(?) where John was interviewed before going on to play 5 songs live -great stuff!

But I'd dearly live to have a DVD of 'The Golden Section' tour, but alas, I think that maybe one dream too far! frown

...Unless someone knows something different?

What about the answer to my question! wink

So it seems John directed it - we know this for sure?

I wonder if he did any unreleased video work for any later tracks...
