Does anyone else think that 'You Were There' from The Garden sounds a bit like 'My Face', the song that was released on the Smash Hits flexi-disc?

Does anyone else hear the main synth line from 'Underpass' whenever they listen to 'Pater Noster'?

And has anyone else noticed that the Golden Section Tour recording slows down in the second half of the show?

They do sound a bit similar, yes...but one isn't exactly a direct rip-off of the other.

Yes, but again, it's not quite the same. wink

1. Yep! When I bought The Garden and heard that it was "hang on, heard that before...". I guess My Face was a discarded outtake and the riff was too good to lose. smile

2. Yep again. That melody has prob been used on more of his own songs than any other... Wasn't it on Invisible Women as well? smile I guess he liked the tune so much that he just HAD to reuse it.

Neither are identical but obviously 1 has led to the other with "just a couple of changes...". Beats thinking up a new melody I suppose...although there's probably some arty justification for rehashing a tune to fit another track... Not so important when (like My Face) most people wouldn't have heard the original...

3. Dunno, only ever had the bootleg tape version bought at Camden market in the 80s - haven't heard it in years! Can't say I ever noticed... confused

Agree on all points!

It's a characteristic of John's work. He is a revisionist, and has re-worked or re-used lots of bits and pieces throughout his career I think.

Re: the Golden Section Tour. I have a couple of boots from different gigs and in my opinion they ALL play a bit slow.
Hmmm...???

Try "Swimmer 1" too. As on trouserpress.com, "Perhaps thinking it silly to write a distinctive synth riff and only use it once, Foxx recycles Metamatic’s “Underpass” as “Invisible Women,”..." smile

Does anyone else think that there are parts of "Cathedral Oceans 3" that sound suspiciously like parts of "Cathedral Oceans 1 & 2"? ;-)

I'm actually a massive Foxx fan myself, just being a little facetious.

On a more serious note, it's quite common for most artists to re-use melodies or chord sequences in different songs. For example OMD used the first part of the “Enola Gay” riff on “Stanlow” (off the same album!!!), Visage rewrote “Fade To Grey” as “The Damned Don't Cry” and most of Numan's well-known songs use pretty much the same chord sequence.

Obviously you can't get sued for ripping yourself off, so does it really matter if the occasional melody sounds familiar?

...and anyway, isn't it the chord sequences and melodies that a particular artist uses that we like about them in the first place??

Doesn't really matter at all; I'm certainly not complaining, just noting the similarities...

On the subject of the Golden Section Tour recording slowing down, I wasn't talking about bootlegs, I was talking about the officially released recording, packaged with the Omnidelic Exotour . Listen particularly to the end of 'When I Was A Man...' and the beginning of 'Systems of Romance'; I thought my CD player had pegged it, then found that it plays like that in every CD/DVD player in the house...

My guess is that 2 different recordings of the song were 'spliced' together at that point. Not sure why that would've been necessary and it's unfortunate cos' it spoils the song a little, I think. That's only a minor gripe, though - it was great to hear 'The Golden Section' tour, after so many years!...I was at both those gigs in London - at The Lyceum and The Dominion?

Blimey, it's so long ago, I can't remember...I'm sure I must've been in A pub before the Dominion gig, but if it was 'The Grapes', then I didn't see John and Robin Simon in there. Saw Louis Gordon in 'Sahara Nights' though, before the Scala gig in 2003. <img border="0" alt="[Suave]" title="" src="graemlins/suave.gif" />

The main difference with "You Were There" is it has the reintroduction of that choppy "Systems of Romance" guitar (which may or may not have been played by Robin Simon). "My Face" seems to be all electronic.

Robin Simon did play on "Systems Of Romance," didn't he? (The song, I mean...not the album. Of course he played on the album. nervouslaugh )

I know, and that's what I said... I think Robin played on "Systems Of Romance" (the song). "Night Suit" is the only other one I can remember. I know for sure he played on that one.

For far as I know, Robin played Guitar on :

Systems of Romance
Dancing like a gun
Night Suit
Fusion /Fission
Walk Away
Running across thin Ice with Tigers
The Hidden Man
Stars on Fire
Lose all sense of time
This side of Paradise

I don't know about the single b- sides but I feel 100% sure he played guitar on "Hiding in plain sight" too. Sounds like Robin's style...

Just noticed a Smash Hits with My Face still taped to the front, available for a fiver on ebay uk. And a 1980 copy of Sounds with a JF interview. Is that interview available to read online?
