There seem to be a lot of references to 'smoke' in the lyrics. Maybe the album's sponsored by Benson & Hedges?

Actually, it's *precisely* that sort of cringeable couplet, delivered in such a ridiculous deadly serious portentious way, which first appeared on songs like "TRAVEL" on 'Pleasures...', that seems to crop up with worrying prevalence on CRASH AND BURN.

I was sniggering out loud at some of them,
all about curtains or summat.

ANd that "Ray1/Ray2" has GOT to be tongue in cheek?! It's Plastic Bertrand done as technogoth cheese!

To my mind "Ray 1/Ray 2" sounds like Sigue Sigue Sputnik.
I do think the line "What's that green smoke coming from the kitchen?" quite funny though. Maybe Louis burnt the tea while John was recording his vocals? smile

Hi - I'm back from holiday now and my very good friend Metal Beat had send me a copy of Crash and Burn to my holiday address so I have listen to it several times. WHAT A GREAT WORK!!! After I heard it I cannot wait until the next concert! I Love tracks like DRIVE an CRASH AND BURN. SIDEWALKING remember's a lot to Kraftwerk sound but it is very good. And the excellent track SMOKE - a nice quiet track again. After the quiet sound from P.O.E., Crash and Burn comes over us like hit like a hammer! I remembered when Ha! HA! Ha! comes out after the qieter ULTRAVOX! debut and I feel the same when I hear the rocky sound From Crash and Burn now. I like all the tracks and I agree with some of you; this will be the best work from John and Louis until yet. As I said in the past ; John had found a very good partner with Louis and I like the Metamatic sound they make! This is my favourite side of John's music and Crash and Burn is a fantastic work again in this kind of John's music!!! GREAT, FANTASTIC , EXCELLENT!!!!!!!
Thank you John and Louis- GO ON!!!!
There is no question I stay on the next gig!

Bye

Hello Furniture.
(Unusual name). Anyway I agree with your comments but I would give Crash and Burn 10 out of 10. smile
The punchiest songs are Drive, Broken Furniture, Sidewalking and She Robot. Great lyrics and songs that swim around in my head. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="cool.gif" />

C&B is getting some great reviews - you get the feeling that John and Louis really enjoyed making this one.

Anyone see the advert for the disc in The Times last Friday? THE TIMES ?!?!?!

O.K. I finally got around to getting hold of a copy of 'Crash & Burn' which arrived from play.com without delay. I have to say I'm not over impressed on first listen - a few of the tracks seem 'overlong' ('Drive' for example) - but it's early days yet. I think I need to 'live' with this CD for a bit....

Really starting to enjoy 'Crash & Burn' now, though I have to say that having bought 'Pleasures of Electricity' at around the same time, it's the earlier album that I prefer....so far...

Back to 'Crash and Burn' though: 'Drive' is good, but still a bit too long for my liking. The stand out tracks for me are: 'Crash and Burn', though I'm not sure about the effects applied to John's vocal - I keep expecting him to say 'Exterminate!' laugh The song really rocks hard though and I can't wait to hear it done 'live'. Dust and Light is brilliantly done, as are 'Sidewalking', 'Sex Video' and 'She Robot'. The others are solid tracks but yet to grab me in quite the same way, but it's definately a very good album indeed.
A big thank you to John & Louis. See you on the 17th Sept. in London.
Cheers.

I like the squelchy filter bit in ULTRAVIOLET/INFRARED.
Although the lyrics about getting tangled up in the curtains are a bit ahine :-0)

I seem to be having a bit of a John Foxx day today!
I just ordered a ticket for his concert in Edinburgh (14 September).
Then I read the album reviews of Crash & Burn and decided I needed to buy it straight away. So I went into town to Virgin, where it costs 15.99.
I didn't bother.
Instead I cam back to work and ordered it from Tesco.com for 11.49. Oh, and while I was at it I also ordered "Pleasure of Electricity", "Shifting City" & "The Garden..plus" (each at 11.49 or less).
This brings my John Foxx collection almost up to date (I don't have "Cathedral Oceans" yet).
Now, as a sensible, married 40 year old family man, how do I justify it all to my lovely wife?

I know where my priorities lie. Two years ago at the Mean Fiddler I splashed out 70 quid to catch up with John's releases and the remastered CD's. :p My wife knows how much I love the music from John and the "old" ultravox stuff. I felt it was best keep quiet shocked Now there's honesty evil

You can justify the purchase of 'Cathedral Oceans' by saying that you need it in order to complete the set (true!)......Don't worry about the rest.... laugh

An update. Thoroughly enjoying "Crash & Burn", Pleasures of Electricity" & "Shifting City" (in that order).
I asked my wife several times if she wanted to come to the Edinburgh gig. The answer was a resounding "NO!". So I thought "sod you, then" and immediately ordered "Tranlucence/Drift Music" and "Cathedaral Oceans 1&2" (very cheap at 7dayshop.com).
Am I living up to my BAD Dave name a bit better?
(I chose my name BAD, as in Big Audio Dynamite, rather than the NYC attitude thing, BTW)

Weird, catching up with all these threads. smile

A few personal titbits re C&B...

1. As I've said elsewhere, the title "NeuroVideo" fits this album perfectly, so I'm a bit sad John played safe and went for the new title. frown

2. I remember the distribution "issues". I decided to help out the Foxxless masses by putting my copy up for sale on ebay. Sold it to a guy in new York and made a new friend. smile

2a. Although there are lots of great things about Amazon, they do seem to damage their own business quite badly by not having books and CDs available on their release date. (Unless it's Harry Potter or Robbie Williams, igws.)

3. The copy I sold had that annoying white sticker on the back cover. What was that about? When I bought my replacement copy there was no white sticker (and the copies in the shops now don't have one either) which pleased me. smile

4. For once I'm in agreement with the majority: C&B is rather better than PoE. I sympathise with John a bit here. The cry went out: "Give us a Metamatic for the Millennium!", but people decided that the results were too cool (and the beats maybe too lame). But he listened, agreed, and produced something with much more oomph, even if that meant it's rougher around the edges.

5. Favourite songs...
Drive. A good evocation of the motorway life. I especially like the stop-go moment around the 2-minute mark.
Furniture. One of John's best new compositions. The music's interesting, and the lyrics too, though the quality of the writing deteriorates a bit as the song progresses...
C&B. Is it too late to release this as a single? A powerful track and good video material.
UV/IR. Although this, like some of the rest of the album, harks back to the fusion/fission nonsense of the past, it's good nonsense! I slightly prefer the chorus as sung at the gigs.
D&L. The stand-out track for me at the gig, it's the track I now listen to most. A song that communicates with people very well.
Ray. wtg John! I love it! A Touch and Go for the 21st century. On Metamatic there are three or four moments where you catch the hint of a laugh in John's voice, but that's been missing from the more earnest recent works, so it's great to be able to share a joke with The Man again... laugh

cheers, A

if john & louis should decide to release another single from the "crash & burn" album - which is by now highly unlikely , but one can still dream , can't we !? wink - it should be another double-a-side like "drive" / "broken ..." again with "crash & burn" plus "ray 1 / ray 2" this time , as those are the most powerful songs - imho , of course wink - that they've made so far & i suppose that this would work very well on the dancefloors of certain clubs & parties , which i've already tested btw !!! laugh

maybe a remix of them would spawn some more or new interest in such a release too !!! wink

anyway ... c u ! smile

I played Crash & Burn the other night, for the first time in several months...and loved it from start to finish! The title track is still the best by far, in my opinion, & I agree it would have made a great single and video. I also found myself liking 'Cinema' a lot more than I did previously. I still prefer the single edit of 'Drive' though.

Anyone think they know all the words to C&B? I'm stuck on verse 3:

HE'S A LOVER OF ^^^ MECHANCIAL TOYS
YOU'RE DISCOVERING THE REFLEX ANIMAL JOY
YOU WILL ALWAYS ^^^ AND DESTROY
YOU WERE BORN TO ACCELERATE AND ENJOY

Thanks, Adrian

Here's what I have...

He's a lover of lethal mechanical toys (lethal mechanical)
You're discovering the reflex animal joy
He will always search you out and destroy
You were born to accelerate and enjoy

Got (I think) all John's lyrics sussed now if you need any more help

CnB illustrated...

I once (many years ago) used MS Publisher to create graphical versions of all the lyrics on The Garden, and I'd like to replicate a few of them on the web sometime. But as you can see, I don't really have the graphical wherewithal at the moment to make something really effective. I'd be interested to see what other people can come up with for any of John's songs.

Even more apt now that I read in the papers what I used to use as a joke, that George W. Bush is saying that "God told him to do it", a defence used by many people currently enjoying protracted, fully catered, all-expenses-payed sojourns in the historic and wild surroundings of an establishment on Dartmoor. Were that the case, George, why didn't you do it as He instructed rather than sending a lot of other folks to do it for you? You might be in trouble come the day . . .
