I find this one of John's most haunting and mysterious songs - and definately one of my favourites from Metamatic. But was it written about anybody in particular? The Kennedy references seem to be interesting.

I interviewed John a couple of years ago, and this was definitely one of the many questions that was asked. I sent a transcription of this interview to John for his comments before I published it on Metamatic - but he has (so far) been unable to provide me with any feedback. And, without checking, I can't remember what his answer was regarding 030...

It sounds like a compass bearing, maybe a garbled snatch of radio message from one of those balck and white films you half wake to at some small hour of the morning with your head full of somewhere else: " . . . maintain present bearing, Lieutenant, 030 full ahead . . .".

Hi Alex
This is a tough one. I've just looked though the lyric's and I'm going to GUESS that Lieutenant 030 is some one similar to John from the past. I base this on "Someone pushing through my outline". Doubtless there will be many other theories. confused

It's a bit like in the Ultravox song "who's Mr X" bemused
Regards
Peter

when i asked googlle this as part of the research project i started a year ago all i got was this quote, attributed to "Lieutenant 030" but no clue who he might be!

"Life's too short to be serious all the time.
I intend to stop being childish when I become senile,
and not before." (Lieutenant 030)

BUT...I'm read truck loads of JG Ballard at the moment so maybe he will turn up in there somewhere, maybe in the Atrocity Exhibition". Or possibly there's a reference in some Azimov novels??

I 'll yet u know

"Lieutenant 030" was the nickname of a well-known Usenet troll (you know, those guys who post annoying messages in newsgroups) - very active during 1992. He's a JF fan (he also posted some messages searching for the IMW CD) and probably got his nickname from the track - we'll have to look elsewhere... confused

Rob, any chance you might publish the aforementioned interview without eek waiting for John's comments?

On second thought, you could just drop a line to johnfoxx@metamatic.com and let us know the answer!
