Originally posted by Alex S: I find this one of john's most haunting and mysterious songs - and definately one of my favourites from Metamatic. But was it written about anybody in particular? I interviewed John a couple of years ago, and this was definitely one of the many questions that was asked. I sent a transcription of this interview to John for his comments before I published it on Metamatic - but he has (so far) been unable to provide me with any feedback. And, without checking, I can't remember what his answer was regarding 030... Rob

Hi Alex This is a tough one. I've just looked though the lyric's and I'm going to GUESS that Lieutenant 030 is some one similar to John from the past. I base this on "Someone pushing through my outline". Doubtless there will be many other theories. It's a bit like in the Ultravox song "who's Mr X" Regards Peter

Originally posted by birdsong gourmet: when i asked googlle this as part of the research project i started a year ago all i got was this quote, attributed to "Lieutenant 030" but no clue who he might be! "Lieutenant 030" was the nickname of a well-known Usenet troll (you know, those guys who post annoying messages in newsgroups) - very active during 1992. He's a JF fan (he also posted some messages searching for the IMW CD) and probably got his nickname from the track - we'll have to look elsewhere... Rob, any chance you might publish the aforementioned interview without waiting for John's comments?
