Good morning guys!

Last night, sitting at the edge of the world it suddenly ocurred to me what would have been the track listing of the original The Golden Section that was shelved by John in '82 (John has a predilection for doing this!). We all know (from our Dear Rob ) that most of these tracks were later on released in one form or another. I have a feeling that the track listing was the following:

Side A
Endlessly (original version)
Young Man
Dance with Me
The Lifting Sky
Annexe

Side B
Wings and a Wind
A Kind of Wave
A Woman on a Stairway
Like a Miracle
Twilight's Last Gleaming

Any other suggestions? smile

well ... i don't have any other suggestions , as i quite like yours , chris !!! wink

but what i know about "the golden section mk I" is that it was once almost released under the title of "in the glow" shortly after the original version of "endlessly" came out as a single back in '82 !!!
i even remember that virgin has already assigned a catalogue number to that album !!!

funnily enough this reminds me of the story about kraftwerk's unreleased album called "techno-pop" , which was scheduled for release in '83 right after their "tour de france" single came out & which also already got a catalogue number by emi !!! bemused
in kw's case it took them 3 more years to come up with the final version of the album , which was called "electric cafe" in '86 !!!
thank god that it took only about 1 more year for john to finish "the golden section" , which was indeed a fine album !!!

anyway ... c u ! smile

Ah! Olaf I was just calling Rob ie Rob Harris onto the Forum. He's actually John's database,eyes,ears... you name it! wink

He must have more to add onto the "In the Glow" project and perhaps a track listing similar to the one I've devised. smile

So Rob fuse metamatically into this matter!!! excited

I always thought 'In The Glow' would have been a completely different album to 'The Golden Section'.

Whilst 'The Golden Section' was probably John's best ever collection of songs, the album was let down by an over-reliance on those dreadful 80s 'Simmons' drum sounds that probably sounded great at the time but now seem horribly dated. If you compare the two versions of 'Endlessly', I'd have much preferred an album's worth of the more psychedelic style of the original.

Thanks guys for the info about the unreleased or the "just planned" 1982 "In The Glow" lp ...I didn't know it had a working title.

Chris: it's possible that the songs you mentioned (and which ended up being the b-sides of the "The Golden Section" singles) could have been written at the same time as "Endlessly" and "Young Man". But it's also possible they were written later together with the songs which were included on "The Golden Section".
So, it's possible there are other songs which were written/recorded (?) for the "In The Glow" lp and which are still unknown.
Btw, I always considered "Endlessly (original version)" and "Young Man" as anomalies in the John Foxx discography, because of their style/sound production...they're no more "The Garden", but they're not yet "The Golden Section", even if both songs are characterised by the psychdelic elements which will be featured in a massive way on "The Golden Section". Btw, Herbert: I agree 100% with your opinion.

In any case, 1982/1983 must have been a prolific time for John Foxx...I remember having read in an interview on the italian teen music-magazine "Ciao 2001" that he wrote about 50 songs for "The Golden Section"...the interview dates back to 1985, for the release of "In Mysterious Ways", and it was a three half-pages one (the other half-pages were an interview with Midge Ure!!!!! Btw, I lost that magazine...shit!). Well, I admit that I'm no more 100% sure of this info...I was more sure of it in 1985 wink

I always thought that the b-sides of the "The Golden Section" singles were good enough to create another lp consisting of them. So here's the tracklisting:

01 The Lifting Sky
02 A Kind of Wave
03 Your Dress
04 Wings And A Wind
05 Annexe
06 Endlessly
07 Dance With Me
08 Like A Miracle (extended...I wondered why he cut off the very nice piano ending on the lp version)
09 A Woman On The Stairway

Title: "The Silver Section", maybe?

The Golden Section has really grown on me. I think it contains his best vocals and some really diverse song writing.

Great thread everyone!
