It's a very interesting interview. Nice to know that John liked Ackroyd's "London" as much as I did.
The "overgrown garden" John mentioned is in Bomarzo, not too far from Rome. I've been there and it's beautiful and astonishing. It's known as "Il parco dei mostri" because of the enormous sculptures depicting mythological monsters.
There's a curious story behind it BTW: the Orsini prince wanted to have a park built right there, but the designated architect objected that there were some huge boulders which were almost impossible to move away. Therefore the prince decided that the boulders had to remain in place, only to be converted into monstrous creatures. In fact, most of the sculptures in the park aren't made of marble, but are ordinary rocks.
