My viewing last night also included the 'Lost Kingdoms of Africa' on BBC4...prior to that the 'Sahara with Michael Palin'. Also caught Dan Cruikshank's journey across Ethiopia and 'The Man who shot the 60s' I was supposed to be doing the tax return but....

Watched James May "Edge of Space" last night on BBC2 just before the Hairy bikers.James May is one lucky guy,not only getting to be flown in a Lockheed U2,but seeing what most of us never will in our lifetime, unless it's on TV that is!! Personally if I were to go any distance in an aircraft,it would have to be either the English Electric "Lightning",the BAE "Tornado" and the BAE "Typhoon",not forgetting the classic Spitfire! Anyway,it was a brilliant programme.

I know I was very jealous of him when he went to "the edge of space" - not much opportunity for 40+ woman in the north of the UK to do that - wonder if I could get a grant for it? lmao Last night we saw the first episode of the earth programme - basically ended up putting a couple more places/experiences on our holiday "to do" list.... laugh We've also enjoyed Michael Portillo's train journey prorgamme so far as well.

To bring the intellectual level down again -

New series of "Mock the Week" starting tonight,
though unfortunately without Frankie Boyle.
and "24" series 8 starting at the weekend on Sky

Mock the week is funny, however I did call it the Frankie Boyle shouty show!! What's it going to be like without him,and who is taking his place? I'm always missing the Michael Portillo Great Train Journeys programme as I'm watching the news at that time!

Although I'm not sure that this series has lived up to the standard of earlier shows. The fact that it has leapt all over the schedules and now that it is on before the 9.00pm watershed it has been edited for 12 year olds. Back to 10.00pm on BBC2 I think for the regular show and then QIXL would be much improved as well.

"The Green Man". Delightful film that could have gone on for at least another half an hour without out-staying its welcome. As if Alistair Sim ever could. Some delightful, genteel touches and such awfully unconvincing "car going fast" footage make this black-and-white gem far more colourful and truly escapist than most of today's CGI-for-the-ADD-generation offerings.

It also provided a most splendid quotation finely encapsulating the true British gent's eternal struggle between the work ethic, good manners and raw animal passion (a cross I've borne and been nailed to - no mean feat when the actions are simultaneous - for years):

Reginald Willoughby-Cruft (Colin Gordon) to William Blake (George Cole): "By Heaven! I'd thrash the life out of you if I didn't have to read the Nine O'Clock News!"

"Five Minutes Of Heaven", repeat of an award winning 2009 drama starring Liam Neeson and James Nesbitt. Which concerned an attempt at atonement by an ex Ulster Volunteer Force member, with the now grown younger brother of the young Catholic man he'd murdered 34 years previously.

The fabulous Seven Ages of Britain. Medieval art woohoo - my fave in a closely fought contest (futurism coming a very close second, with cubism and surrealism a joint third....). I was a happy bunny watching that laugh

24. I loved the first two series but it went a bit (well, a lot) downhill after that. I haven't seen it since series 5 I think. This one isn't too bad.

*** SPOILER ALERT ***

The last episode of this was shown this week - and I have to say it was one of the worst series finishes I have seen for a while.

It ended with the programme title being taking almost litterally and Sam waking up on the first manned mission to Mars. The whole 1973 scenario being a simulation created by a computer implant while the crew where in a form of suspended animation.

Almost as bad as the Dallas/Bobby Ewing "it was all a dream" story line ( though I am not going to admit to watching that )
