hi y' all !

these two songs can be found on the cd re-issue of "in mysterious ways" , which i currently don't have myself , as i have the original album & the two 12 inch singles from it , "enter the angel" & "stars on fire" ( the later one incl. the 3rd bonus track on the cd re-issue called "city of light" ) !!!

my question now is on which singles or other releases of that period were they originally featured , as "lumen de lumine" sounds a lot like "pater noster" from "the garden" era around 1981 & "hiding in plain sight" also doesn't sound like as if it was recorded durin' 1985 ( totally diff'rent drum sounds & other more subtle nuances that doesn't seem to "fit" in that era ) & for the "in mysterious ways" album @ all !!! bemused

does anybody know more about the history of those two bonus trax , fellows ??? *pure_curiosity_again*

btw : i came across two diff'rent versions of "hiding in plain sight" via the i-net : one is 05:52 long ( i suppose that it's the full length original version ) & another one is jus' 03:44 long & sounds like a radio edit ... more or less !!!

what's the story behind it ... rob ??? *jus'_curious*
was "hiding in plain sight" maybe even supposed to be a single release , but didn't made it - for what reason soever ??? *indeed_very_curious*

however ... thanx a lot already in advance for any helpful answers , fellows !!!

anyway ... c u ! smile

Hi MetaMatrix,

Your question on Lumen de Lumine is rather interesting. John after his solo debut Metamatic started on 3 different projects. The follow up to Metamatic which was never finished or released (Some tracks will probably feature in the long awaited Metamatica). The second was album based on The Quiet Man which again was not finished or released except for The Quiet Man 3 and The Quiet Man 4 on the Touch Meridian casettes. I'm pressing Rob who is pressing John to finish and release this. The third and most relevant one here was that he was developing an album with something called The Human Host (ie multi-choral synth sounds). This became a)The Garden b) Cathedral Oceans. Through this experimenting came the tracks Pater Noster and Lumen de Lumine. This latter track as you have well guessed comes from an earlier period. Rob probably has the answer to this but I would also guess around the Golden Section period before in Mysterious Ways.

John liked this soundscape so much that he is about to release the third Cathedral Oceans album.

The Hiding in Plain Sight ie Stairway track was the b-side of Enter the Angel. Obviously the shorter version for the 7" and the longer one for the 12".

Stairway does belong to the In Mysterious Ways. In an interview (I can't remember where)he mentioned that during this time he was very interested in the live sound of bands like Big Country and U2. He was taking the "Organic" theme a step further.

Stairway is my favourite from this album and a great way for him and Robin (Simon) to bow out from the pop world temporarily.

hey mr. c ! smile

thanx a lot for your rather detailed answer to my quest !!! *thankful_smile*

yeah ... u are absolutely right , chris ... "hiding in plain sight" is actually the very same song as "stairway" on the b-side of the "enter the angel" singles ... which i've jus' rediscovered due to listenin' to it again !!! bemused  shock

this leads me to the question , why it has two so diff'rent titles on the original & later (re-)releases ??? confused
has john ( or rob wink ) ever given an explanation to that in any interview or other statement here or elsewhere ??? *pure_curiosity*

to me it seems a bit odd to give the exact same song two diff'rent titles , because "hiding in plain sight" fits much better , as it was also the chorus line in the song !!!

was the title "stairway" on the original single releases maybe a misprint & another , but diff'rent song of that name existed , but wasn't released then ??? *jus'_curious_again*

btw : the reference of big country in the interview with john quite surprises me , as big country is actually my all time favorite rock band !!!

anyway ... c u ! smile

Hi...
Olaf: no doubt that "Stairway/Hiding In Plain Sight" sounds a bit out of place when you're looking at the "In Mysterious Ways"-related releases. Anyway, if you put together "Stairway" and "This Side Of Paradise" they're musically quite consistent. Even the drum sounds are similar...so, IMHO both tracks seem to come from the same "U2/Big Country inspired" - so to speak - session.
Together with the harsh guitar ending of "City Of Light" they represent the "rock/noisy" side of the "In Mysterious Ways" era, which is more complex than it appears at first sight. I wrote my own personal review of IMW here:
http://www.Ultravox.org.uk/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=000113

About the title mystery...John likes stairs...check the spiral staircase on the cover of the "Endlessly" single and the video itself. Also, the cover of "Crash And Burn" is IMHO a still from the movie "The Spiral Staircase".

"Lumen De Lumine" was featured on the "Stars On Fire" double 7". It was side d (side c being the 7" mix of "What Kind Of Girl"). To my knowledge, this 7" was released in the UK only as a double single.

Chris: I checked the "Enter The Angel" singles. "Stairway" is 5:00 on the 7" and 5:52 on the 12". Probably, the 3:44 "edit" available on-line is either a "homemade" edit or an incomplete track.

By the way, "Stairway" is one of my "desert island" tracks...
cheers!

hey roger ! smile

thanx a lot also to u for your detailed info concernin' my quest !!! *thankful_smile*

about "this side of paradise" i can only say that it was always my least favorite song on the "in mysterious ways" album , as it feels & sounds totally out of place in the whole album context imho & would have worked maybe much better as another b-side ... jus' like "stairway / hiding in plain sight" or "city of light" , which i both even like more than "this side ..." !!!

btw : it was me & not mr. c , who discovered the shortened version of "stairway / hiding ..." that sounds very much like a professionally made radio edit , as the overall sound quality seems to be even a lil' bit better than the original one !!! bemused

however ... if u want , i can upload it to my ftp server for u to listen to , fellows !!! wink

anyway ... c u ! smile
