Hi Ash, How are you my boy?

There's been no fresh falls since the weekend, but lots of ice where the residual snow has thawed and refrozen. Plenty of frost though...a lovely hoar frost last night and today.

I was at a work do last night and drove back from Herefordshire at midnight through thick fog and icy roads. The frost on the trees was stunning.

Got back home about 1.30 and the sky was crystal clear, with loads of stars, well below zero, but beautiful. I was so done in, I went to bed though....should have got the camera out!

How's the weather in your neck of the woods...plenty of material for Christmas Cards and winter images I bet.

Yes, plenty of snow up here - AGAIN!
Two weeks worth, with virtually no let-up.
Just cleared the drive - AGAIN!
Only been out with the camera twice though, but bagged a few goo un's in the process. Been busy printing and framing for the past six weeks or so. Just bought me'sel a Canon 10-22 wide angle lens. Should be here soon, so looking forward to putting it through its paces.

Ash, you've certainly got some proper snow where you are. I like the blog images...the three cows in the hill beneath the monument I like the best. I'd be interested to see how the new lens shapes up.

Time I got cracking before it thaws...I'll be trying some night shots over the next few days....the annual Geminid meteor shower has started today and will peak next Monday, so will be on bulb setting for a bit!

This is nothing to do with the Germaloid shower, where you get "piles" of images..

It certainly was. Saw the show at MEN last sunday, surround sound was amaaazin, great show.

I bet you are popular at home....

I picked up a second hand Samsung GX10 with two zooms. Only 10 megapixel, with Pentax mount lenses but a good enough camera to get started with. We shall see how long it takes me to push it to its limit when I get it into a gig.

It's a very steep learning curve, and I've only dipped my toe in so far...there are way too many program modes for my lo-fi analogue mind to comprehend so far. I've figured out that there is a Bulb mode, and have worked out manual and aperture priority (which are what I have on my film cameras)...even so first time out I messed up the ISO and shot the Derbyshire pics at 1600 ISO, and through the menu system couldn't work out how to get a 100 ISO...the grain/noise works OK though...a happy accident methinks. More by luck than judgement!!!

The instant playback is most gratifying, as is the multi shot mode, which when I eventually manage to get to use it at a gig will be useful.

The jury's out and will be for a long time. Most of my stuff is landscape and architecture and the latest fastest DSLR is of little benefit in terms of capturing an image. For me it will compliment rather than replace film based image making

I have downloaded a trial version of Photoshop elements, but that's another learning curve I'm not sure I want to get into (apart from basic manipulation cleaning up etc) as it represents a significanat amount of investment of time behind a PC (which I already do for a day job!) which takes me away from taking pictures. I won't dismiss it as I see some beautiful work using this stuff, but I can't commit to that yet.

Having said that, it's a nice solid sturdy camera with decent weatherproofing and will be good in the field.

My penultimate post before the forum went into mothballs talked about my new digital adventure....well almost 18 months later and things have changed...but not so much.

Well the old Samsung has been retired (well almost!) in favour of a Nikon D700, which I bought immediately before Nikon announced its successor (bugger!!). The first gigs I shot with the Samsung were OK, but struggled in really poor light as the lenses were not fast enough, so struggled on for a while until I had to make a choice.

My first gig with the Nikon was John Foxx and the Maths show at The Leamington Assembly....and F16# wow the image quality was far superior to the old one, and now we are almost inseparable. I'm still shooting gigs and now I'm contributing to 3 different review and image sites and met a whole new circle of friends.I'm dying to shoot at least one gig on the "Brilliant" tour...

Ive upgraded software twice to Lightroom 3, bought from Adobe in the days just before they upgraded to Lightroom 4...(one step behind lol!) and have progressed a little more with using the software. I think I still have a little too much Luddite in my blood, so rumours of my going over to the pixel pusher's side are a little premature.

Film is not dead!! as my fellow analoguers keep telling me, and I see the evidence for this everywhere. I'm still shooting loads with my old cameras (35mm and Medium Format) and have an exhibition at the Local Heritage centre in two months time, all film images printed in the darkroom..and I still occasionally take a film camera into the pit with me!! I've also got involved with a group of photographers in Brum, and have held a film developing workshop for them as they were keen to learn some traditional stuff. I've put my technical notes online if anyone wishes to have a look..

Where do I go from here?? Well apart from digitising my film negatives (so that I can get images on my website) and getting a decent grip on the software, I think I'm happy with a foot in both the analogue and digital camps...I'm building a new darkroom at the moment, so will be doing a lot more in there over the coming months.

Lets see what the next 18 months brings .....
