Mine has just arrived. The remastering is OK. Certainly brighter than the original on first listen - albeit through some laptop speakers. Will give a final opinion when I've had a chance to play it properly.

The cover & artwork is crisp with references that Universal have licenced it out but the overall execution is just a little too 'precise' and the result is that it looks a little amateur as a result.

Actually, it's pretty good remastering. There are some instances where some of the snares get lost in the mix but it's a minor quibble since I probably wouldn't notice on casual listening.

Worth buying.

Slight edit:

Actually I will amend that - can anyone else hear two loud clunks around 19 seconds in 'The Dancer'? They sound - to me - like the electronic kick noise from the first 15 seconds or so has not been faded out properly.

It's pretty expensive to get in the UK. Amazon are selling it for 17.89! The Rubellan website, who did the actual remastering (and it's a very tacky-looking website) is only charging around 11, but then the shipping costs the same again. Too expensive for a single disc.

I've got a copy as well and noticed that straight away ... I've ripped all of the tracks and edited them back to the track lengths/index points of the original UK album, so that these bass anomalies are now right at the intro' of The Dancer. It sounds as though there are actually three bass/kick drums under the toms, which shouldn't be there. Presumably, these are on the source tape that has been used. I've also noticed the "Ohhhhhh" is missing at the very beginning of Malpaso Man, plus the album tracks tend to be running one to two seconds faster over their total duration. Minuscule details though ...

But, as expected, Scott's remastering is excellent, given the age of the source material. I wonder if this was perhaps a US copy of the album that was slightly different to that of the UK?

Well, after checking out my original New Zealand vinyl pressing of the album, it turns out that those bass drum beats are actually present under the toms roll intro' of The Dancer. The "Ohhhhhh" is also not included at the very beginning of Malpaso Man, so it would appear as though there are slight variations in the master used for the UK vinyl release, subsequently used for the poor quality 'West Germany' CD releases (e.g. Polydor 800 029-2), and what may have been used for the various international releases of the album.

Just in case anyone else was actually interested ...

That sounds like a reasonable explanation. It is just a shame that the kicks are really quite in your face.

Separately, another forum member is experiencing issues with playing disc on decent equipment. Given I haven't heard that anywhere else then it sounds like a dodgy disc as opposed to any, e.g., red book issues.

Hi, my copy is on the way, looking forward to hearing it. Hopefully no major issues that you mention. This is my first ever CD issue of this album. The Rubellan remasters generally seem to get favourable reviews.

I know - I just meant that it is par for the course for a US CD.
