Good luck with that one don't think it's ran over three and a half miles look's like McCoy is feeling confident but the price is plummeting good luck.

In the street I live in,we started by picking numbers(2 per no)I've picked 30 & 40, my wife picked 2,5&8. We know nothing about horses so it made no difference to us as the names meant nothing and no-one in the street had any listings.

I never go by 'form', 'goings' etc, I just pick one & have a punt. Reason I chose this is it is a McCain horse. That family haven't done too badly over the years!!

I've got fixed odds of 14/1. I don't understand the Tony McCoy comment, he's not saddling this horse...he's on 'Don't Push It'.

Ya know David, I have a funny feeling Ian maybe gave us a prediction and didn't actually put any cash on it. I'm sure he would have been on by now to tell us how much he'd scored for. I hope he did have a punt. If he didn't... biglaugh

BTW, what was Ballabriggs S.P ?

I don't have a pc at home hence me not being online since the National.

Ballabriggs started at 14/1. I think he went out to 16/1 at one point but started at 14/1. Did I have a quid or two on it...that would be telling. wink The satisfaction for me is predicting a winner. Anything else is a bonus.

If you saw the race the turning point for me was Ballabriggs nearly copping it at one fence. I said to myself "That is going to be the turning point & he is going to go on & win". I did also think he might fall at the next fence or two, but when he practically flew over one fence I knew he was on his way.

After the race it occured to me I have picked a winner in every decade since I was born - except the 60s. Leaving aside my all time sporting favourite Red Rum, I have predicted...

70s - Rubstic
80s - Grittar
90s - Royal Athlete & Rough Quest
00s - Amberleigh House
10s - Ballabriggs

If you follow racing you'll know the last two has the McCain connection - father & son.

I was at a conference in Leeds when AH won. Think it was 2003 or 2004. I won a fair few quid that year as besides the bookies I had a couple of quid in the conference sweepstake.

Don't think I'll beat my 200 win on Royal Athlete. I had 2 to win with fixed odds of 50/1. The starting price was 40/1. Won 28 the following year with Rough Quest which was a bit of a comedown!!

The National or my birthday is the only time I ever have a flutter...well apart from Ultravox the first time it ran!!

28 - practically slumming it in comparison LOL! If I recall our London jaunt that year was a "push the boat out" experience with the proceeds, hence the hotel in the Sloane Square area...very nice it was too and wouldn't have been considered if not for Mr McCain...This year's wins are not in the same league but will still pay for a nice meal out at the Michelin place near us....

I don't really know anything about horse racing but with a McCain horse, in my view it is fairly safe you will get something back, the same as some would think that with Tony McCoy. I didn't back Tony as I actually didn't think would have a win this year...mind you I said that last year so what do I know!!

Shame 2 horses died & a jockey was seriously injured. I did wonder why Bechers & another fence were avoided on the 2nd circuit - it was where they died.

Yet again the anti racing brigade are calling for the race to be banned including Brian May!! My view is out of those people who want the race banned as it is 'cruel', how many keep a bird or rodent of some kind locked in a cage, tropical fish in a tank, or rabbit or guinea pig in a hutch!!

If anything I would ban the use of whips in any race. The winning jockey has been fined or banned for a race or two for excessive whip use. I personally don't think the National is cruel, as quite simply if a horse doesn't want to jump...it won't!! & if you were going to ban jump racing...would you then ban showjumping?!!

You can hardly compare the course and fences of the National with any other race, it is the ultimate test of a horse and jockey, it breaks my heart to hear of fatalities after the event, but when you read of the heights and widths they are expected to jump perhaps something could be done about it. frown

That said there are some, Ginger McCain included, who say that because there have already been changes to some of the fences it means that the race is run faster and that's where the main problem lies as it's a fast scramble to get over fences....

one of the problems this year appears to be have been the heat. Perhaps if they know if its going to be a particularly hot they could delay the start until early evening ?

I agree with what Joanna says in some respects but over the years they have improved the design of the course & indeed some of the fences. Anyone remember The Chair which I think had an open ditch on one side? That was one of the improvements made by getting rid of that.

As far as the heat goes no I don't agree with changing the start time. Let's face it...how many previous Grand Nationals have been run in a heatwave?!! This was a one off as far as the heat goes.

Yes it is a fast race....it's meant to be!! Some of the fences are a challenge ie Bechers, The Canal Turn, that's why it is known as the world's greatest steeplechase. I don't think there is much else they can do make it safer than it already is!!

I said if they KNOW its going to be hot then delay the start - not change the start every year.

I still wouldn't want to see a change to the start time personally. You'd probably need about a week's weather notice about the conditions & we know how reliable the forecasts can be at times!!

I see Ballabriggs is already 14/1 to become the first horse since Red Rum to win back to back Nationals. I shan't back it to win next year as I don't think it will but will have an e'w on it.

In the year that the meeting was postponned due to an IRA bomb threat they where able to re-organise it to run 48 hours later on the Monday , so shouldnt be too difficult to organise the start time on the day/day before.

Unfortunately deaths occur at Horse Racing and yes the majority of fatalities occur in jump racing.

More deaths have happened on other courses its just that the Grand National is a big event and more publicised.

This link give you idea how many horse fatalities in racing each year.

True but this was different circumstances & not weather related. Do you remember the year of the non National when Esher Ness 'won'? They didn't reschedule that race. I see what you're saying David but I still don't think they should change it. A fatality could still occur whatever the weather & time the race is run.

Yeh I see what you're saying. I think part of the reason the race is getting faster is because of the changes that have been made ie some of the fences aren't as high as they used to be. I don't think anyone tumbled at the first fence this year either....that was practically a foregone conclusion in years gone by that at least one would drop at the first hurdle.

Only because it would have been unfair on the horses that had run 2 circuits
